Uganda President Museveni Takes Lead in Preliminary Vote Tally
Feb. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni took a lead over opposition candidate Kizza Besigye in preliminary results from the east African country's first multiparty polls in 26 years.
With 5.3 percent of the ballots counted, 313,432 Ugandans voted for Museveni, giving him 59.6 percent of the vote, Badru Kiggundu, chairman of the Electoral Commission told reporters in Kampala. Kizza Besigye, leader of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change, had 195,948 votes, or 37.3 percent.
Final results will be announced tomorrow. About 10.5 million Ugandans registered to vote in yesterday's election to choose a president and a 310-seat parliament.
