Bush to discuss health care during visit to Wendy's
http://www.ohio.com/mld/beaconjournal/13849773.htm

COLUMBUS, Ohio - President Bush plans to make a stop in Ohio on Wednesday discuss health care, according to his schedule released by the White House.

Bush's appearance at Wendy's International Inc. in the Columbus suburb of Dublin will be his 39th visit to Ohio since taking office and his fifth since winning election to a second term...

Wendy's spokesman Denny Lynch said the fast-food chain, based in the Columbus suburb of Dublin, invited the president within the past few weeks.

"We're simply rolling out the red carpet and welcoming the president," he said Saturday...

1. Wendy's - the fast food joint, of which the owner died of a heart attack
and whose cholesterol levels were sky high? (Dave Thomas, right?)

It figures. We're a fast food nation.

33. Excuse me...
Have you ever read Atkins books? Or are you just speaking off the top of your head? Atkins books DO NOT tell readers to eat large amounts of red meat and fats. The induction phase of Atkins diet which limits carbohydrates to 20 carbohydrates a day is supposed to last 2 weeks but can be extended for people who have a larger amount of weight to lose.

The diet though doesn't limit meat because usually people will not eat large amounts of meat because meat is very filling. However, it does have people limit the amount of carbohydrates by having them cut out empty carbohydrates such as pasta and bread and suggesting that people eat at least 5 servings a day of low carbohydrate vegetables such as broccoli, squash, tomatoes and cabbage.

Atkins died from a blow to the head suffered when he fell on the ice. He was in his 70's and in very good health when he fell. He subsequently had weight gain and fluid retention because he was in a coma after he died.

Read the real story here.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2004-02-10-atkins-statements_x.htm

The idea that the Atkins diet is unhealthy when followed correctly and that Atkins died by following his diet was a gross distortion by radical animal rights activists. If you are a radical animal rights activist I'm sorry if I offend you but Atkins was no moron.

By the way it is possible (although difficult) to follow the Atkins diet if you don't eat meat at all. See the following link:

37. sorry
He was in a coma for several weeks after he was hit on the head. During that time, since he already had a heart condition (caused by a virus - not his diet) he retained a lot of fluid and was overweight. He did not diet from his diet.

35. yes I read the Atkins book
Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 05:52 PM by Skittles
someone at work loaned it to me......it's a load of hooey - carbs don't make you fat, too many damn calories do. To lose weight you need to eat less of EVERYTHING, not just one thing. I'm glad to see the company went bankrupt; I've been around for some time and this diet just keeps coming back but it never lasts because it is a fad and a bad one. By the way, that coworker is now on his fourth induction; I can always tell when he's on Atkins because his breath STINKS.

38. Not everyone....
who buys the book and reads it follows the diet correctly. It is not an excuse to eat more calories than you should. It is not an excuse to eat way more fat than you should.

http://www.low-carb.com/atarfavsfapa.html

Fallacy: The Atkins Nutritional Approach is unbalanced and deficient in basic nutrition.

Fact: Atkins deliberately rebalances your way of eating. It is probable that the eating pattern that led to your weight gain was improperly balanced in the first place. The evidence showing that overproduction of insulin is responsible for most weight gain is quite impressive, and the best way to correct an insulin disorder is to avoid foods that stimulate insulin activity—that is, foods high in carbohydrates.

However, the Atkins plan does not exclude these foods (fruits, vegetables and grains). The Induction phase of Atkins—which people often mistake for the entire program—is the most strict, permitting only 20 grams of carbohydrates each day. Those 20 grams come in the form of green, leafy vegetables and can also include nutrient-dense, high-fiber, low-carbohydrate vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus, eggplant and spinach—foods that are hardly lacking in nutrients.

A sample Induction menu containing 2,000 calories and 20 grams of carbohydrate was analyzed using the highly regarded Nutritionist V (the computer program used by nutritionists worldwide). Results of the analysis found the menu to meet or exceed Recommended Daily Intake requirements of 19 of the 24 vitamins, minerals and trace elements. The remaining few Pantothenic acid, sodium, magnesium, copper, chromium and molybdenum) can easily be replaced with a supplement

Once you complete Induction and begin the next phase of the program, you raise your carbohydrate gram count. This phase prescribes even more nutrient-dense, green, leafy vegetables and fruits such as strawberries. With these additions, the plan far exceeds requirements for fiber. The second part of this criticism is more thought-provoking. Dr. Atkins is deeply committed to finding a vitanutrient solution for most health problems and believes that no eating pattern contains optimal nutrition. As a result, we can all improve our health by taking vitanutrients that are targeted to our individual health problems, disease risks and nutrient deficiencies. Moreover, low-fat diets are typically deficient in foods that are high in the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and the essential fatty acids (EFA). The EFAs are, in fact, our number one deficiency in this country. Low-fat adherents also may be low in the nutrients we get from meat, such as vitamin B12 and carnitine. And if people overeat foods made from white flour—which is often the case on low-fat diets—they will be low in half the B-complex nutrients (the half that isn’t included in the mandatory enrichment) and most of the essential minerals. People on a low-fat diet need supplementation desperately.

I have cut my carbs and lost 25 pounds and while I don't limit them to 20 carbs a day anymore I have continued to hold down my weight and have lost some more in the last year. I also exercise, but Atkins recommends exercising too. I still have some to go but I plan to continue eating high protein, low carbohydrate foods.

The book actually recommends eating high quality lean meats and low carbohydrate vegetables, and cutting out processed foods.

By the way, the book continues to sell, it is the Atkins food products that went bankrupt. The basics are to cut white flour and white sugar out of your diet. While I still watch carbs, I mostly just don't eat flour, sugar or hydrogenated oils anymore.

If you read the whole Atkins New Diet Revolution and come away with the idea that you can eat as much meat and fat as you want then you have misread the book.

49. Lots of protein....
right, but lots of people (but not all) eat way too much carbohydrates (the average person consumes 300+ grams of carbohydrates per day = 1200 calories) and fats (or way to much period) and many do not eat enough protein. In general, my doctor recommends (and also other sources too) that I eat a minimum of .8-1.8 gram of protein for each Kg of weight and a maximum of 40 grams (160 calories) of carbohydrate a day.

So for someone who weights 180 lbs that would be 65 to 147 grams of protein. The lower number is for a sedentary person. The upper number would be for someone who does a lot of exercise. Notice from this link (http://www.annecollins.com/protein-foods.htm) that an average 3 oz serving of beef is about 21 grams of protein. I try keep my protein intake at about 125 grams a day (500 calories). (I weigh more than 180 lbs but I have lost almost 30 lbs and still have quite a bit to lose). The rest of my diet would consist of fats - but since the protein I usually eat consists of eggs, lean meat, seafood, and soy protein, I would say my fat intake is probably less than my protein intake and usually comes from the cheese, eggs, and lean meat I eat, olive oil (I don't eat hydrogenated oils if I can avoid it), avocado (limited to 1/2 a small avocado a day), and nuts (limited to 1 oz a day).

While Atkins allows unlimited amounts of meat, his most recent book published in 2004 strongly recommends eating at least 5 servings of vegetables a day from a long list of low carbohydrate vegetables. Most people will not eat large amounts of meat (at least not after a few days) because meat has very little effect on blood sugar and therefore does not make you hungry a half hour after eating like a candy bar does.

And while people who only have 5 or 10 lbs to lose may be able to lose it on a low-fat diet, most people who are significantly overweight also have considerable insulin resistance and will need to restrict carbohydrates to correct the insulin resistance and bring their metabolism back in line.

While grains and fruits are good sources of carbohydrates, when trying to fight insulin resistance most grains and fruits (particularly any kind of flour and very sweet or starchy fruits like bananas) have too many carbohydrates to break the insulin resistance. If you are going to eat grains and fruit then fruits like berries (especially strawberries), apples and pears and grains like barley, millet and quinona are much better choices than rice, flour, and corn.

This menu (which contains just 20 grams of carbohydrate) demonstrates how you can eat during Phase I, or Induction -- your first two weeks on the plan.

Breakfast
Three-egg omelet with avocado
Mozzarella cheese and tomato
Decaffeinated coffee with cream

Lunch
Beef round steak (8 oz)
Spinach and mixed leaf salad with mushrooms, onions, celery and parmesan cheese

Dinner
Broiled salmon (9 oz)
Kale topped with garlic, lemon and sesame seeds

This diet consists of around 90 grams of protein. That is not really a very high protein diet but it is a low carbohydrate diet. If you wanted you could eat more vegetables but people don't really need to eat grains to be healthy. I usually eat a diet quite similar to this without quite so much meat (I usually eat about 4-5 oz portions) and usually have a 25 gram soy protein drink with strawberries and/or blueberries and flax seed (fiber to replace the grains) once or twice day.

Perhaps it takes a little bit more planning to eat a healthy Atkins diet than to just eat a bunch of meat but it isn't impossible for it to be a healthy diet. Actually if you are trying to be healthy as well as trying to lose weight Atkins looks quite a similar to (and can be followed just about like) South Beach.

69. It's not carbs that are the problem
It's refined carbs such as sugar and white flour. One needs to eat more complex carbs such as whole grains and avoid junk food.

I have to agree with the critics. The Atkins diet contains too much fat.

I've followed the South Beach diet. They would not recomend a 3 egg omelet, the mozzarella cheese would be low or no fat plus the portions of salmon and steak would be about half of what you list.

73. Well...
As I noted, I usually eat about half those portions of meat - but I supplement the protein with soy. That's how I keep the fat down. And I don't eat hydrogenated oils. There is way too much evidence that they are even worse for you than saturated fats.

While I think South Beach is good, I do think that SOME people actually do have to limit carbs more than others. It is a prooven fact that some people do have a problem with carbohydrate metabolism. If you are one of those people carbs actually are a problem and while some carbs are good everybody has their own limit to what constitutes too much. While some people may be able to eat 100-130 grams of whole grain and fruit some people will not be able to eat that much carbohydrates and still lose weight.

I believe during the first two weeks of South Beach that the diet calls for limiting the carbs to 40 grams. That isn't much different from Atkins in that respect. It starts with an induction and then has the dieter gradually add carbohydrates until the weight loss stops.

By the way, as far as convenience foods go, I love the South Beach TV dinners. They have way less carbohydrate and almost double the protein of any of the other "diet" TV dinners. They are the only ones that I will buy.

76. Atkins and South Beach are basically just diabetic diets
And, they do indeed work, IF followed correctly. Abuse of the guidelines is what's bad. Bad carbs are bad, bad fat is bad, and tweaking some of this really does benefit some people. It doesn't work for me, but it has worked wonders for diabetics I know.

44. How appropriate since so many older people are working at wendys
and don't have health care.

I hope he stops by burgerking to talk to the adults and elderly too. They're certianly there.

He can tell them why he cut their benefits and why they're working there. He can explain the economy and nafta. Oh wait, he if he did have a clue, he'd still lie and tell them smth like, he won't touch medicad and medicare... anymore. Since he ran on saying he wouldn't touch them and they are two of the hardest hit progams in his cuts.

51. Bush Visits Ohio to Boost State GOP
DUBLIN, Ohio - President Bush mixed politics with his prescription for what ails the nation's health care system on a trip Wednesday to Ohio, which was a pivotal state in his re-election and one with key races in this year's midterm elections.

The president made his case for health savings accounts at Wendy's International Inc., where 9,000 employees have signed up for the accounts since the hamburger giant began offering them last year.

...snip...

The visit to Ohio, one of a series of road trips Bush is making to underscore themes in his State of the Union address, had a political component too.

...snip...

Bush was joined at the event by Taft, George V. Voinovich, R-Ohio, and Reps. Pat Tiberi, David Hobson and Deborah Pryce. Sen. Mike DeWine (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio, who is in a toss-up race against Democratic Rep. Sherrod Brown (news, bio, voting record), was invited, but had a previously scheduled event.

I'm surprised he'd want to be seend with folks like Taft and DeWine...and visa versa.

68. I used to work in their Marketing Department
I don't even want to go into the preferencial treatment given for men when pay is concerned, or the near inexistence of people of any race or color, other than pure white. And their SVP staff was mostly comprised of your A-Typical Male Pig! Get my laundry, clean up this spill. Total slave drivers caught up in the day of 1960's secretaries, and certain to stifle any opinion one might have. My former boss/VP (who was a great guy), left the company shortly after I did - He's a Sr or Ex VP for Domino's now or something. I think he was one of the only people there that saw the problem. And he didn't stick around long, either. But then again, most people with a progressive and inclusive opinion don't stick around. ESPECIALLY when they start giving credit for their employees. I mean, employees don't come up with good ideas, right? :sarcasm:

71. a golden opportunity for our party, if we want to win Congress
A health care plan that really rations treatment, increases waiting periods, and trashes the hippocratic oath. But who cares, why should babyboomers or baby-busters expect anything in return for decades of dollars paid in payroll taxes?

Who cares if this money is all thrown away on beating up student protesters in Iraq, nation-building in Afghanistan, or on a federal government that only gives orders..but doesn't take any? Vince Foster can shoot himself...and Clinton has committed a murder; but if Cheney shoots somebody in the chest...that's just a hunting accident dammit!! :banghead:
