Man, 18, sought in gay bar attack
(CNN) -- Police on Thursday are seeking a man in connection with gun and hatchet attacks overnight at a gay bar in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Three people were wounded.

Authorities described suspect Jacob D. Robida, 18, of New Bedford as violent, armed and dangerous. He is wanted on suspicion of three counts of attempted murder and hate crimes, police said.

One bar patron suffered deep cuts on his head, and two others were shot in the torso, police said.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." - Gandhi

Unfortunately we are at the "then they fight you" stage, and it is ugly. :-(

18. No, the quote refers to a movement...
not to a 'person'.

And yes, the bartender should have blown this asshole's head clean off.

3. This is called,...."terrorism" per our own guberment's definition.
Did you know that, in the last 10 years there have been 27 times more incidents of domestic terrorism than terrorism by a non-US citizen?

and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. This kind of hatred, I fear, is fueled by hate radio.

6. It's fueled by those
who are trying to take away our rights or make sure we never get them. Republicans, fundie churches, wingnut radio, all of it. My understanding is that things were pretty peaceful in MA until the wingers started that ballot initiative to get gay marriage reversed. Of course those promoting it know it will stir up the violent assholes....to them it's a bonus.

Also is it just me or is the MA gay rights group statement that "unfortunately the gay community is used to these kinds of attacks" really inappropriate? We should never be "used to" these things, we should be outraged and demand justice every time.

10. No one should be "used to" attacks
In the nineteenth century, folks from Boston didn't feel that slaves should stay with their masters in the South because they were "used to" being treated as less than human. When police attempted to get a runaway to take back to the South, Bostonians banded together to protect the runaway slave, because they knew and understood that this black man was a human being, with rights just like them. It saddens me to think that the modern Bostonians don't take this sort of stand with gays.

12. New Bedford isn't Boston and it had a gay Congressman for years
Edited on Thu Feb-02-06 04:20 PM by Gormy Cuss
New Bedford is in Southeastern Mass. near Providence, RI. Gerry Studds represented this district for years, first in the closet, then later after he was outed in a most spectacular way by being censured for having sex with a house page. He continued to represent this rather conservative district for years after that.

I don't know yet whether this is the same guy, but isn't it disturbing to think of his kind growing up and seeking a career in law enforcement...

27. Saw something about this on CNN
The Junior Police Academy is for troubled teens, to teach them discipline, etc. Some are court-ordered into it, some sent by families, some may be voluntary. The police spokesman didn't know which was the case with this kid, nor whether he had a record--or at least wouldn't say.

29. Profilers say there is a thin line between criminals and officers
ie: many sociopaths are drawn to law enforcement, although most are too "disorganized" to become one. And n o, I'm not saying all cops are sociopath. Not at all.

22. I personally would like to thank all the people who aren't for gay
marriage for enabling this kind of shit.

Marriage is not a religous institution to be wholly owned and approved by. It has been for a long time a civil institution. When you are ok with denying gays the right to marry you are denying them a civil right.

When you set aside a segment of society consistently and constantly like this, dickheaded asss swabs like this guy will take their frustrations out on it because they believe that most people believe like themselves (therefore probably less punishment to be had from some corners and outright adulation from others).

Even if you are for civil unions but not for marriage this is the message you are sending and I mean that towards voter and elected official alike. Thre can and should not be compromise on the part of any Democrat regarding civil rights and their corresponding liberties.

23. AP article ..... Police Hunt for Teen in Alleged Hate Crime
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) - The attack on three patrons at a gay bar was a crime against the entire city, the mayor said at a candlelight vigil outside the nightspot.

Mayor Scott Lang joined about 150 people Thursday night outside Puzzles Lounge, where a young man dressed all in black went on a rampage with a hatchet and a gun earlier in the day, wounding three patrons, including one critically. Police said the attack appeared to be a hate crime.

Authorities searched for 18-year-old Jacob D. Robida, who was wanted on charges of attempted murder, assault and civil-rights violations. He was still at large early Friday, police said.

Under heavy police presence, community members and local politicians denounced the attack at the vigil.

28. No,
he might belong to something calling itself a church...but he's no Christian.

I serve a gay-friendly Christian church (this year my moderator and treasurer are lesbian partners). I get sick of these hate-mongers calling themselves Christian. Imagine how Jesus must feel!
