Iraq veterans round on Bush
31 Jan 2006

George Bush is to make his State of the Union address to the US as many former soldiers turn on the President over the Iraq war.

Many former US military personnel who have lost limbs or worse in the conflict are standing for Congress on an anti-war platform as Mr Bush is widely anticipated to vehemently defend the war.

Figures such as Tammy Duckworth from Kentucky, a helicopter pilot who lost both legs in Iraq is now standing for Congress asking for the rest of the troops to be bought home.

Mr Bush is expected to argue the US must remain aggressively engaged in Iraq around the world, rejecting critics who feel Washington is provoking ill will and should pull back.

1. When to become a soldier - you kind of assume your government
has got your back. Rather than purposely loosing control so the war can go on as long as possible. I'd be mad too. That's not what I know governance to be.

6. They better be careful; if they wear the wrong Tshirt into the House
chambers they may be arrested by Bush's troopers

8. Unbelievably, Duckworth is for staying in Iraq.
From her site, www.duckworthforcongress.com:

"The fact is we are in Iraq now and we can't simply pull up stakes and create a security vacuum. It wouldn't be in our national interest to leave Iraq in chaos and risk allowing a country with unlimited oil wealth to become a base for terrorists."

Blah blah blah it was a mistake but we have to stay blah blah blah.

This DLC-style "leave-on-a-timetable" position is a cruel delusion, whether it comes from a chickenhawk or a war veteran. And it reduces Duckworth's candidacy to little more than a sentimental folly, a photo-op paraded forth by a party that still doesn't get it. What it says about Duckworth herself is even more tragic: if elected, she will impose on others the very trauma she herself endured.

As Cindy Sheehan has said: no votes for any politician who supports the war.
