Reid admits Democrats can't block Alito
WTF? Did I miss this here? Sorry if this is a dupe but I couldn't find one. What is going on? Will Dems attempt a filibuster or not?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid admitted on Friday he and fellow Democrats lack the votes to block President George W. Bush's nomination of conservative appeals judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Everyone knows there is not enough votes to support a filibuster," Reid said, referring to the procedural roadblock that some Democrats said should be used to put off a vote on Alito.

I have seen this article before but I now think he has changed his position.

Sorry about the headline, I couldn't resist.

He now supports a filibuster.

6. some of us work long hours ...I really didn't see this til I got home late
tonight. I have not read news or heard it all day. Sorry, but my work takes me out to remote rural areas that have no cell phone coverage, let along internet. You know, tribal lands, America's third world nations under their wings.

Sorry for not posting this sooner. Wish I wouldn't get penalized.

9. Try anyway...
Americans love an underdog who fights, even though chances are slim.

The message of filibuster is as important as the success of a filibuster.

For the Dems to filibuster is an act in defence of the PEOPLE of America against the facist BushClan. Even in failure the Democratic party can remind the American peole that they are the party of the PEOPLE agianst those who would turn them into serfs.

Do it!!! Even if it will fail.

Perfect. That is so true. Very well put, Hyernel.

I still think there is a shot. It will depend on how many Dems can be convinced to join, and the ranks have been growing all day. But even if they aren't able to pull it off, I for one, have had my respect for those who are trying increase substantially. That's important for the Democratic party.

AND I will pledge to do all I can to help their campaigns in the future.

On edit: Wait a minute. I take that back. The message is very important too, but not more important than defeating Alito!!! Jeez, I'm so tired I don't even know what I'm saying!

11. If the foot were in the other shoe, the GOP would have filibustered
a liberal nominee even there was a filibuster of ONE!

The failure to oppose Bush's extremist agenda for America has made many Democrats weak, soft, and lazy. It is through combat that the Democrats can gain the toughness that will be necessary to become an effective opposition party. The taste of Republican blood should be enough incentive, even if the battle is lost.

For days we went about demanding a filibuster, now we have a group of Senators that will filibuster Alito. They deserve our support for just showing up in the field of battle, which is more than what this party has done in the past five years.
