Daughter of Chile's Pinochet detained in US

Wed Jan 25, 2006 9:15 AM ET

SANTIAGO, Chile (Reuters) - The eldest daughter of former dictator Augusto Pinochet was detained at Washington's Dulles International Airport on Wednesday after leaving Chile in defiance of tax evasion charges, Chilean officials said.

Chilean government officials said Lucia Pinochet Hiriart had flown to Washington from Argentina, and that she was considered a fugitive from justice.

"Mrs Pinochet, ... for whom there was an arrest warrant from a Chilean judge, was detained in Washington," said Chile government spokesman Osvaldo Puccio.

Pinochet Hiriart has been charged with tax fraud related to some $1 million in undeclared taxes and falsification of documents. She was served with a subpoena over the weekend to attend court on Monday, but never appeared.

2. "Political persecution"?
According to the Chilean tax office, Lucia Pinochet has evaded US$859,000 (£480,000) in taxes.
----------------

One of her brothers, Marco Antonio, described the charges - which also include the use of false passports - as "political persecution" against the Pinochet family.

The investigation into the family's finances began in 2004, after a US Senate probe into Riggs Bank found that General Pinochet held secret accounts there.

Further investigations found that the former ruler held about US$26m in foreign accounts.

He is accused of failing to pay nearly US$2.5m in taxes between 1980 and 2004, and is also being investigated for embezzlement of state funds.

10. Politics doesnt even enter into the equation.
Pinochet was not a politician, he was a military dictator. He represents no political faction, he is a criminal of the highest order and his daughter is a criminal too.

3. This should answer anyone's questions about whether or not the
Pinochets really have been living on a stolen fortune all this time. Hidden accounts in more than 100 banks. Oh, really!

That daughter should be glad she was only stopped in the States by American personel, rather than having been detained in 1970's Chile, by her father's people, taken to a torture center, tortured brutally, then thrown out of an airplane, like some of his victems.

5. Prensa Latina story reveals a little additional info. on this blight:
Lucia Pinochet Hiriart was tried Monday by Judge Carlos Cerda for malicious and incomplete statements on taxes, omitting information, and using false passports in the trial on his father´s secret accounts at Riggs bank.

Also prosecuted were her mother, Lucia Hiriart, her brothers and the former dictator´s three closest employees, who received provisional liberty Tuesday after paying bail set by Santiago´s Appeal Court.

Pinochet´s elder daughter was the only one who did not appear in court. Judge Cerda first served a subpoena, then declared her to be in default, and finally decided for her apprehension by the Investigation Police to avoid her flight from the country.

According to the daily, Lucia fled to Argentina on Sunday in her car, accompanied by her son Rodrigo Garcia. On Tuesday night, Cerda issued an international warrant of arrest against her.

Sources close to the family stated that Lucia then traveled to Miami to meet with her friend Antal Lipthay von Kisfalud, one of the main advisers of Manuel Contreras, former chief of the National Intelligence Direction.

12. It would be poetic justice. The people who were tortured in Chile by her
father's Nixon-initiated, protected, and supported regime were accused of being "leftists," and probably not one of them had stolen money from Chile's national treasury and squirreled it away in over 100 banks.

13. And, of course, if they did as he and his minions did, i.e.
have the family members sitting on a bunk nearby watching their loved one being tortured - have Pinochet watch his daughter being tortured in front of his eyes, I fear it would be water off a duck's back. Do you get my drift?

When, after WWII, local Germans were obliged to tour the concentration camps to see what had been done in their name a few yards from their homes, many were overcome with anguish - at least one, a Mayor, committed suicide. But there were a certain number who smirked and thought it quite funny.

14. No doubt. People who can justify brutality to others have to come from a
whole different zone from the beginning. They are not quite human. If they can keep smilin' while their people are torturing, murdering, terrorizing any living beings, they don't have the right stuff anywhere inside. They are a sub-group. Exactly the kind of ghoul Richard M. Nixon would adore ruling over a nation of people who had actually chosen Salvador Allende. What spite.

Honk.

forces of darkness, as Christ teaches us in his Gospels. The only thing true about them is that they are slaves in the truest, indeed eternal sense, and the slaves of slaves, the principalities and powers - orders of angels, in this case the angels of darkness (whose leader, Satan Christ saw cast out of Heaven like a flash of lightening) and who at present bear rule over this world.
