Lawmakers to request Ground Zero health czar
BY THOMAS ZAMBITO

NEW YORK - New York's congressional delegation will urge the Bush administration Wednesday to appoint a health czar to oversee the treatment of thousands of Ground Zero workers left sick after toiling amid the rubble left by the Sept. 11 attacks.

The bipartisan demand comes a week after the New York Daily News reported that lawyers for thousands of injured workers have turned up at least 23 Ground Zero workers, many of them in their 30s and 40s, who have died from cancer and other causes.

Their families have joined some 5,200 responders in a pending class-action suit that alleges the city and its contractors didn't do enough to protect them from a toxic environment at Ground Zero.

1. How about fewer "czars"
and more people who actually do something?

2. I was thinking something similar. We don't need another fool
highly-paid do-nothing unqualified "Czar"--who'll probably turn out to be another "Brownie."

11. and I was thinking brownie was
THE perfect person for this job. I'm certain he would do a heck-of-a-job.

3. So true
Surely someone needs to look into this, get at the truth, and help those workers who are still alive. I just have no faith that Bushco is competent to do that - they'd much rather put a crony in place who'll do jack shit.

5. Who began this "Czar" mumbo-jumbo? Remember what happened to the czars?
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 11:25 AM by KzooDem
Especially the last czar? He was help prisoner and executed along with his whole bloody family (no pun intended), and HIS father had his legs blown off by an attacker with a grenade and died from the injury. The last of the Russian czars - at least the ones most Americans know about from history - were stupid and unpopular. Why would anyone want to ally themselves with those images? Surely the idealogues inside the beltway can come up with a better moniker, n'est pas?

6. Methinks it started with Reagan
who appointed the first "Drug Czar".

Personally, I think we should spell it "Tsar" just to be difficult.

7. I'm sick of Czars too, just appoint someone that will do the job..
and forget the stupidass lofty titles. I think we can all agree that the whole Czar title is trite.
Personally, I think the term Czar is the kiss of death, like naming your gaming character Conan or something.

9. czar is such a 19th century term.. I have always hated the use
of that word when it's applied to "modern" eforts..

The drug czar didn't quite "git 'er done", no did he? or the education czar ..

The thing is.. we already have ALL the people necessary to handle the health issues of the GZ workers and people who lived nearby. It;s called the public health department. Why not just fund it properly and staff it and let them do the work..
