Schwarzenegger brings Bush strategist to 2006 campaign
Schwarzenegger brings Bush strategist to 2006 campaign
Carla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writer

Thursday, January 19, 2006

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, steeling for a tough 2006 campaign, has tapped another top White House veteran to join his re-election drive -- hiring Matthew Dowd, a lead architect of the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign to be his chief campaign strategist, sources said Wednesday.

The addition of Dowd, a confidant of top White House aide Karl Rove, Bush's former chief pollster and a former senior adviser to the Republican National Committee, is expected to be announced shortly. The GOP strategist heads ViaNovo, a management and communications firm in Austin, Texas.

Dowd will join the campaign in February, but sources close to the governor said Wednesday that Mike Murphy, the political strategist who headed Schwarzenegger's 2003 recall victory -- and last year's devastating special election defeat on ballot initiatives -- will continue to advise the governor.

"Mike is a brilliant guy ... who has decided to move beyond the day-to-day managing of political campaigns,'' but will play an important role in the governor's 2006 election effort, said a source close to the Republican governor who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

1. He might be a brilliant strategist, but even HE needs some
historical success by the candidate to be able to exaggerate about! Has Arnie had ANY successes? I don't think playing the religious card in Calif. will work, nor will the race card, so past successes are all that's left!

2. Let's hope the rubes who put him in office in the first place stay home.
He only got in because of a bunch of yahoos who thought it would be "cool" to have the Terminator as Governor. Hopefully they're be drunk or sleeping it off in November.

Rove will have his hands in this campaign up to his elbows. But maybe not. He will be working like Hell to keep Congress fascist. Rove knows that Bush will be out and that he and many of his buddies will be looking at time when the Democrats take over.
