DeLay eyes funding post
California short in appropriations
By Edward Barrera and Lisa Friedman, Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - Former Majority Leader Tom DeLay has muscled a Southern California Republican out of the running for a slot on the coveted House Appropriations Committee, potentially frustrating California's quest for a greater share of federal funding.
Rep. Ken Calvert, R-Riverside - who had been widely considered to be on a short list for an opening on the panel that handles the federal budget purse strings - said this week that DeLay's announcement that he intends to seek the position almost certainly shuts him out.

"For now, I'm out. I had a good opportunity to get the seat," Calvert said. "I hope to try again the next legislative session."

While GOP leaders will not vote on the assignment until they return from recess later this month, DeLay - the Texas rep who held a spot on the panel until 2003 - is expected to get his wish.

1. This man should have no seat on any SEnate committee... period
He has spat on the laws of the Constitution and the Congress more times than I can remember. He is up on charges. He was forced from his leadership position. He needs to either resign his seat or STFU and sit there and behave like an elected official, not some power-seeking criminal.

5. Right, this will clean up the "Pay to Play/Slush fund" politics
image in the public's mind :eyes: Then again - each appropriation item would suddenly become open for scrutiny (per ties and favors/donations to DeLay and then to all other GOPers on the committee) - that could get interesting.

4. Unbelievable....it really is.
What happened to all that "Reform"? The least the repubiCONs could do is appear as if they are serious. It is not just the fact that Delay has been indicted, it is all the evidence so far in the media of the connections he has with Abramoff. I guess since Ney is stepping down from his chairmanship, perhaps he will join Delay on the appropriations committee. Another day, another :wow: from our representative government.

7. All in due time, my friends
The Hamper is facing three challengers in the primary election this year, and one of them - Tom Campbell - looks like he has a slight chance of winning the nomination. Even if Hot Tub Tom does make it through the primary, there is no way he can win in the general election, IMHO.

Then maybe he will take up knitting with Newt Gingrich. They have a lot in common.

And don't forget, he just might find it difficult to run an effective campaign as Duke Cunningham's cellmate.
