Brazil - Thirty Five Indigenous Leaders Assassinated in 2005

3/1 - The 35th murder of an indigenous leader in Brazil took place just before Christmas, on the 24th of December 2005. Dorvalino Rocha, leader of the Guaraní Kaiowá, was shot dead in Antonio João, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Rocha, 45 years old, was shot by one João Carlos Gimenez, a security guard who works for local land owners. He has turned himself in with the federal police.

The Guaraní Kaiowá have their own land in the region, called Nhanderu Marangatu. However, they can not live there because it is occupied by farmers and land owners. Therefore, they are forced to live in camps close to the MS-384 Highway.

The land dispute causes many conflicts between the farmers and the indigenous tribe. A day before the assassination of Dorvalino Rocha, the leadership of the Social Movements of Mato Grosso do Sul had warned the state authorities for possible

1. I wonder if that has anything to do with the push to sell
Brazilian land to foreign factory farms like American pig farming.

7. Trucks in Brazil have automatic tire fillers.
If they get a flat tire and have to get out to fix it when they are out of the metro areas, they will be attacked. They have to be able to fill the tires and keep going.
