DeLay Rep Says Boss Not Swayed by Donors
DeLay Rep Says Boss Not Swayed by Donors

Saturday, December 31, 2005

(12-31) 11:57 PST WASHINGTON, (AP) --

A spokesman for embattled Rep. Tom DeLay on Saturday disputed any assertion that donations to a nonprofit group linked to the congressman influenced his legislative agenda.

Those donations, to a now-disbanded nonprofit group called U.S. Family Network, came from interests close to indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, according to a story in Saturday's Washington Post.

In an e-mail, DeLay spokesman Kevin Madden said the donations were not a factor in the congressional activities of the Texas Republican and former House majority leader.

"Mr. DeLay makes decisions and sets legislative priorities based on good policy and what is best for his constituents and the country. Any suggestion of outside influence is manipulative and absurd," Madden said. "Mr. DeLay has very firm beliefs and he fights very hard for them."

4. No, he delivered all right.
He's not denying he took the money. Or that he promoted the legislation that the "donors" were pushing. He's lamely claiming that there was no linkage because he only does what he thinks is right. Riiiiiight.

If that's his only defense, he won't last the week before he's hounded to resign by the Republican leadership, which he no longer controls.

He pushed through the IMF legislation the Russians wanted. And the tax breaks the textile companies in Saipan wanted - textile companies that basically enslave their workers. He got the money, he got the legislation passed. He's cooked.

2. I know the conventional wisdom says
you gotta respond to all negative stories or they become embedded in the public consciousness. But these guys just look PANICKY. Now I know why they were in such a snit over getting the case in Texas out of the way - they wanted it gone and forgotten before the Jackoff story hit the fan. Look for bugman on all the pundit shows denying he ever even met Jackoff.

3. I thought an honest Texas politician is one who stays bought
I mean what they describe here isn't even "honest graft" as per a long dead Tammany Hall ward heeler who while admitting to taking bribes pointed out that to be dishonest is to take the bribe and then not do what was asked of you. Which wouldn't surprise me about Mr. Delay. Even among crooks, he's a crook.

5. Prove it, Bugman
Show us a timeline of your votes overlaid with a timeline of your trips and perks and who paid for them. Who really paid for them. Come clean about the money and let the voters decide for themselves.

7. Oh, THIS sounds ugly:
~snip~

In April 2005, Crew (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) reported:
A children's charity established by Tom DeLay, the House majority leader, has been underwritten by several of the nation's largest companies and their executives, including companies that routinely lobby lawmakers on issues before Congress, according to a review of charity records released by the companies and other documents...

The Gates and Dell family foundations have donated at least $350,000 to Mr. DeLay's charity since 2001. Among the largest corporate gifts was a $100,000 check given to Mr. DeLay last year by the Corrections Corporation of Nashville, which manages federal prisons. AT&T and Exxon Mobil say they have each donated $50,000.

Like other charities, the DeLay Foundation, which operates from a post office box near Mr. DeLay's house in Sugar Land, Tex., is not required under federal laws to release a donors' list. Nor does it have to account in detail for how it spends millions of dollars in donations on behalf of abused and neglected children.

You might notice this link quotes from the Washington Times. Who would have expected to see Sun Myung Moon's paper taking a kick at Delay's backside?

17. Absolutely nothing to it, The media is grasping at straws. Tom is
a good man and does right for his constituents and for the love of money the country.

Mr. DeLay makes good decisions and sets good legislative priorities based on good policy and what is best for his constituents and the country. Any suggestion of outside influence is manipulative and absurd, and nothing but dirty rotten politics.

Tom DeLay has very firm beliefs and work ethics, as God is his witness, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Ralph Reed and Gary Bauer will stand in back of DeLay in God's name. (As will Tom Craddick)

I tell you Ronnie Earle is an evil man and wants to destroy this country. The next thing on his list is going after the lovable and honorable Senator John Cornyn.

9. "Mr. DeLay has very firm beliefs and he fights very hard for them."
The only belief Mr. DeLay has is that he comes first, not his constituents, and certainly not this country.

"I am the federal government!"
