Published December 31, 2005

GREENWOOD, Miss. -- Leflore County officials have agreed to place a historical memorial to Emmett Till on a courthouse lawn in this northern Mississippi town.

Till, a black 14-year-old from Chicago, was visiting relatives in Mississippi when he was tortured and killed after allegedly whistling at a white woman in 1955.

An all-white jury acquitted Roy Bryant and his half brother, J.W. Milam, in the killing. They later admitted in a magazine story they were the two white men who kidnapped and lynched Till, allegedly for whistling at Bryant's wife. Bryant and Milam have since died.

The U.S. Justice Department reopened the case last year, prompted in part by a documentary that found errors in the original investigation and concluded that several people, some still living, were involved in Till's abduction and killing.

1. Looking at the photo of Milam and Bryant and their wives
How could a woman think that doing what was done to Emmet Till was something great and wonderful? I mean, how could they stand to live with a man who had done such a thing? What warped mentality allowed Southerners of this era to think that doing these terrible things was all right?

3. That sick mentality
has probably been passed on to their children and grandchildren, which is sad and rather frightening.

5. It's the same type of warped mentality the world over.
The 'honour' killings of other countries would fit in with the same mentality as well.

As far as these women are concerned, they are as guilty as the men. All should have been tossed in prison for life.

4. he was visiting from Chicago. His mother insisted on leaving..
...his casket open at the service so that everyone could see what was done to her son.
I wonder if she would take comfort in this memorial...
