US to resettle 5000 Tibetan refugees
US to resettle 5000 Tibetan refugees

BY TILAK P. POKHAREL

KATHMANDU, Dec 30 - The United States Government is preparing to relocate some 5,000 "vulnerable" Tibetan refugees from Nepal to the US and resettle there by mid-2007, by establishing a "processing operation" in Kathmandu.
The US Embassy in Kathmandu confirmed the resettlement program and said it was proposed in President George W Bush's annual report to Congress on the Refugee Admissions Program for FY 2006.

"The President proposed to establish a resettlement program for certain vulnerable Tibetan refugees in Nepal," an Embassy official told the Post, preferring anonymity. "If such a program is established, initial estimates are that it would resettle some 5,000 Tibetan refugees from Nepal by mid-2007."

1. Good? If this was any other President, I would think this was good...
...but seeing how this bozo either screws up, or says one thing, then does the exact opposite of what he promised, I think I'll wait to see what actually happens.

I think the far more "threatened" Tibetans are the Monks and Nuns CHINA has in their prisons like these:

Gedhun Choekyi Nyima,
the 11th Panchen Lama

Gedhun Choekyi Nyima:
Recognized as the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in May 1995 (at the age of six), Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was abducted by the Chinese government only a few days later. Despite repeated appeals to gain access to the boy, no international agency or human rights organization has been granted contact with the young Panchen Lama or his family. He has now been missing for 10 years.

Tenzin Delek Rinpoche

Bangri Tsamtrul Rinpoche

Ngawang Sangdrol,
a Tibetan Buddhist nun, was detained in 1992 at age 15. She was detained and imprisoned for peacefully demonstrating against the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Her prison term spiked from an initial 3-years to a combined sentence of 23 years - a result of several sentence extensions within prison. She suffered from chronic headaches and stomach problems.

2. being a b*sh plan
I would think he plans to use contract them out
as next-to-slave labour for some corporation,
but not before photo ops that herald him as
some great humanitarian.

3. That sounds about right.
Thanks for that, and Welcome to DU :grouphug:

(Normally we give a "Toast" to new DU members, but because this is such a grim and sad subject, I though a "Group Hug" would be more appropriate.)

5. I guess....
...a trillion dollars later the Alexander the Great pipe dream wasn't so great afterall. May be a little cheaper to be the self proclaimed, modern day Dalia Lama?

How is he going to re-settle 5000 Tibetans when he can't even housing for Hurricane Katrins victims?

Laughable, if it wean't so tragic.
