Nevada Tanning Salon Gets 9/11 loan: SBA Audit

By Jim Wolf Thu Dec 29, 3:10 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Texas golf course, a Nevada tanning salon and an Illinois candy shop were among small businesses that may have improperly received U.S. subsidized loans intended for firms hurt by the September 11 attacks, an internal government watchdog has found.

The Small Business Administration's inspector general said in a report made public on Wednesday that in 85 percent of the sample of loans it reviewed, a company's eligibility to receive the money through the program could not be verified.

A leading Senate Republican called for further investigation, but the Small Business Administration said the program was properly implemented.

Excuse me...(slapping self aside head)...was that 85 percent of the Homeland Security 9/11 loans were...(ummm...searching for the proper adjective)...bogus?

I am glad to see a Republican bring this up.

However, contrast this to all the individuals and families about to be thrown out of their temporary FEMA housing via draconian evictions which are due within weeks...and all the homeowners that are buried (both dead and alive) in toxic water, mold, debris, and red tape on the Gulf Coast and you have a cruel and criminal farce, writ large, afoot.

Or, just another business day at the Monkey House.

3. Thank you, silverweb...that's the kind of thing I feared was happening...
People actually victimized by 911 unable to qualify for 911 funds from DHS.

Shame. Shame. Shame.

And if we do nothing about it...I can see the next audit already...of the Katrina/Rita SBA funds.

A report will reveal that up-scale Alaskan hunting vacation tours, private Hawaiian sports-fishing boaters, and Vail ski lodges will be found to have somehow sucked up all the small businesses funding for NOLA and the Gulf Coast.

4. Anyway...on the "Coals to Newcastle" side of this story...
...I've lived in Las Vegas.

If there is ANYWHERE in the US where you do NOT need a tanning salon, it's in the middle of the desert.

You get crispy just going from the car to the store and back, most days.
