Chalabi is defeated at polls

U.N. official says Iraqi elections credible and should stand
By Patrick Quinn
ASSOCIATED PRESS

2:24 p.m. December 28, 2005

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Ahmad Chalabi once argued that Saddam Hussein had doomsday weapons and that Iraq needed liberation and democracy. With that new freedom, the people of Iraq have now decided to vote him out of office.
Preliminary results of the Dec. 15 elections indicate that Chalabi, a deputy prime minister and secular Shiite who had been pegged as a possible prime minister in the next government, will not be re-elected to the new 275-member parliament, his office said Wednesday.

.....

But he fell from grace after his claims that Saddam possessed weapons of mass destruction were discredited. U.S. forces last year raided Chalabi's Baghdad office after he was accused of giving U.S. intelligence to Iran.

In the months leading up to the recent election, however, the 60-year-old consummate insider had slowly been working his way back. In November, he met in Washington with Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

4. it's now official
His alignment with the BUshistas doomed him.

Of course there was the matter of him being a lying scum bag con man traitor..that might have played into the voters decisions. Just thinking out loud.

21. These guys were never interested in diplomacy.
This is the blunt force misAdministration, undeterred by their incompetence, arrogance or ignorance.

The best we can do is get them and us the hell out of Iraq, for everyone's sake.

8. I still suspect that Ahmed will worm his way into a..
position with the Iraqi Govt. He has in his possesion tons of Saddam's secret documents that he uses as a weapon to gain entrance to the power structure.

10. I saw speculation that Cahlibi will head Oil Ministry.
Not a bad consolation prize, huh?

December 27, 2005
Chalabi to take over oil ministry? So the FT hears:

Meanwhile, Iraqi oil officials quoted by Dow Jones said yesterday that the deputy prime minister Ahmed Chalabi would take over the oil ministry, replacing Ibrahim Bahr al-Ulum, who has taken a month’s leave. Mr Bahr al-Ulum is reported to be disgruntled with the current government and earlier this month threatened to resign over a rise in oil prices.

(Thx to reader SH).

20. Iraqis seem to know a crook when they see one
Kudos to them.

I'd like to say Chalabi has had his 15 minutes of fame and can now fade away, but with Dubya for a friend he just might have another job he can screw up in.
