Child molestation on FEMA ship alleged
SUN HERALD

PASCAGOULA - Pascagoula police are investigating an alleged molestation of a 4-year-old Gulfport girl living on the Carnival Holiday cruise ship with her family.

Lt. Davy Davis said Saturday detectives are continuing the investigation. Few details about the alleged incident have been released. Police have identified a possible suspect, but no arrests have been made.

The girl is among more than 1,000 people living on the ship, which has been used as a FEMA-contracted shelter for residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Since the ship docked Oct. 29 in Pascagoula, police have taken 17 reports of criminal activity on the vessel. These include simple possession of marijuana, car burglary, simple assault and making harassing telephone calls on and near the ship.

1. Heartbreaking
I worry for everyone affected by Katrina, but especially the children. I was creeped out when children were seperated from their families during the evacuations, and I deeply fear for those still missing. It leaves a twisted knot in the bottom of my belly to wonder which is worse, for any of those children to be dead, or in the hands of people with bad intentions.

It is good to see you posting, Merh. I hope things are coming together for you, I know that you have been through so much.

3. No surprise here
In fact, I am surprised we have not heard MORE of these stories.

4. And I think that is so sad.
That it is no surprise.

Now they are having all sorts of trouble with the cruise ship living, the owners want their ship back and FEMA is trying to create the camper cities. Quick fixes to the problem just cause more problems.

Folks need homes, places to live, not places to be warehoused.

5. Well unfortunately I get to see the stark reality of child abuse
WAY too often. It is a pattern - as living conditions worsen, as the working poor struggle more and more just to get by, child abuse rises.

I could tell some horrific stories. But I will spare you.
