Probe of lobbyist ties Pombo to web of Indian money
Lawmaker allegedly helped Abramoff's clients on key issue

Richard A. Serrano, Judy Pasternak, Los Angeles Times

Saturday, December 24, 2005

Mashpee, Mass. -- Everybody got something.

The Mashpee Wampanoags, famed for greeting the Pilgrims at Plymouth, will probably be named a nationally recognized tribe -- a designation they've sought for 30 years to benefit from federal aid programs.

Jack Abramoff, the lobbyist embroiled in a Washington corruption scandal, and his firm championed the Indians' cause and pocketed tens of thousands of dollars in tribal money.

And Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Tracy, chairman of the influential House Resources Committee, landed a lucrative source of political donations: the small group of American Indians whose ancestral lands are about as far from his Northern California district as one can get in the United States.

--->>>
Where the investigation will lead is unknown. But several people close to Abramoff already have pleaded guilty in other aspects of the wide-ranging scandal. In recent days, several Capitol Hill lawmakers, including Pombo, have returned donations from Abramoff or turned the money over to charity.

2. what fabulous news!
Pombo is true scum and needs to be removed from the halls of Congress. I am glad to see he is on his way to jail. Pretty soon we are going to need to build new prisons just to house all the repukes who are stealing our money and country. :woohoo:

10. no need to build new prison
we have a fine one here called Alcatraz...I am sure the new inmates would find it quite comfy and the Indians would probably be happy to host them...(did I mention that it hasn't been used in a number of years...)

5. Sad that the Wampanoags had to go to this length
They are a real tribe and it's ridiculous that they have had to give $$$ to this group of crooks just to get the recognition they deserve.

7. Too many tribes are caught up in this scandal.
It's ridiculous that they have to bribe corrupt politicians to get the attention and recognition they deserve.

8. Almost 2 years ago, I began working for a small tribe with 4 bands
and they are not wealthy by any means. Nevada tribes will be last of the last to have Indian casinos in a state that feeds off its own casino industry and also bends over for it.

When I asked why the tribe/bands had been unable to get anything done to make money to support itself people aside from the federal subsidies and a couple of gas stations/smoke shops, I was told the following:

"We don't have the money to pay for DC 'hall monitors' like the gaming tribes do."

Now imagine being part of the Pine Ridge reservation or others like that in remote areas, struggling with poverty daily.

We have allowed our political system to become a nation of hall monitors controlling and pandering to the elected for favors and the stakes are HIGH as well as the COSTS!!

Pombo is slime, and I insult innocent slime. If there was ever a politician that was owned by corporations- lock, stock and barrel, Pombo is that person.
