Congressman calls for Bush impeachment (Rep. John Lewis)

Congressman calls for Bush impeachment

The Associated Press - ATLANTA

U.S. Rep. John Lewis said Monday in a radio interview that President Bush should be impeached if he broke the law in authorizing spying on Americans.

The Democratic senator from Georgia told WAOK-AM he would sign a bill of impeachment if one was drawn up and that the House of Representatives should consider such a move.

Lewis is among several Democrats who have voiced discontent with Sunday night's television speech, where Bush asked Americans to continue to support the Iraq War. Lewis is the first major House figure to suggest impeaching Bush.

"Its a very serious charge, but he violated the law," said Lewis, a former civil rights leader. "The president should abide by the law. He deliberately, systematically violated the law. He is not King, he is president."

But I'm proud that a fellow African-American male is leading the charge for Bush's Impeachment.

Black people have a lot riding on the Constitution; we're only 3 Amendments (13th, 14th and 15th) removed from slavery.

Thanks for of your activism Jawja you make me proud too.

50. You're right ...

He is going to be CRUCIFIED on Fox and smeared in every way possible. But he is right and Democrats have to bet their load on this one or pack up their party and go home.

Bush has committed a clear violation of law in a VERY SCARY way. He has started the beginnings of a secret police. And I don't believe for a second that Bush constrained the targets of his illegal wiretaps to either terrorists OR international calls. There was NO reason to avoid the FISA court unless they thought the FISA court would say no.

My bet is that "terrorists" are actually peace activists, unions and Democratic party offices. I would also bet that any phone call going over a wireless link (satellite or cell) is considered "international" since the radio waves reach orbit and that is "international territory".

12. This is probably a stupid question...
...but I'll ask it anyway.

With all the shit this man has pulled since 2001, why CAN'T impeachment charges be brought against him? What Bush has done makes Nixon's and Clinton's charges combined look like nothing. Clinton was impeached over a blow job, for Chrissakes, but NOTHING is said while troops continue to die and we see our civil liberties slowly being undermined and eliminated altogether.

I'd like to read some thoughts on this from those who are definitely much more politically savvy than I. And I applaud Rep. Lewis for saying what should be shouted from the rooftops, everywhere.

majority although some of them must be thinking twice right about now.

Then, it needs a 2/3 majority in the senate once it gets handed up from the house. Same situation with the repug majority there.

60. The Dems have to make.........
the Republicans support of bush a political liability in the upcoming elections in 2006. If they can make bush a big enough albatross around their necks (he should be already for christ's sake) then they have to do something. They'll go right down with bush if they don't (not that that's a bad thing) but when their OWN cushy jobs are on the line they'll HAVE to do the right thing.
Impeach this prick, NOW!

Because ALL repukes in power, and over 78% of repukes generally are scum who would welcome a repuke dictatorship in a heart beat.

Because these same repukes are thoroughly corrupt and criminals themselves.

33. What a courageous man! We need to salute and thank him!
I just sent Congressman Lewis a thank you note from his site. His comments which you can read from this webpage are outstanding and clear!

http://www.house.gov/johnlewis/05pressreleases/pr121905.html

Quote:
“President Bush and Vice President Cheney have said that the White House informed the leadership of Congress and ranking members of the intelligence committee about this questionable program. However, it seems clear that there was no respect for the objections of those elected representatives who raised concerns about this domestic spying program. I look forward to further inquiry in the House and Senate on these matters. The American people deserve the truth. We must gather the facts and determine once and for all whether the law was violated. There is no question that the U.S. Congress has impeached presidents for lesser offenses.”

*********************************************************************************************

We need more Democrat's like him! Where is Hillary on this???? Where is Kerry???? I want to hear more outrage Dem's! How much more will it take for this to become what it should - out right impeachment! How much more can this country stand??? The voters are getting so outraged that they don't want to vote for fear their vote won't be counted AND now do we have to watch what we say and check out from our libraries? I think not! Raise the real flag - it is the people that will make this country great not a fake ruler named Bush!

47. Protect and defend
The Congress is bound by oath to impeach when crimes have been committed against the Constitution. Chief Justice Roberts might just have a part time job pretty soon. I think there are still a few Republicans who believe no one is above the law. Several are just learning that lesson. I just wonder why it has taken so long. In the little village on the coast where I live my favorite tavern had a float in the Fourth of July Parade 2001 that said "Impeach Bush".
Sure we got some Boos and we haven't been in the parade since, but we were right then and Congressman Lewis is right now. I just hope I can talk my Congressman in to co-sponsoring the Bill of Impeachment.

45. Feasible scenario for House Republicans signing on...
Here's what needs to happen for Bush to stand a chance of being impeached (or at least have the process begun) before Nov. 2006:
The Spygate continues to grow. (This seems likely at least for the time being).

Moderate and libertarian-oriented Republicans--both politicians and pundits--continue to speak out on this. This provides cover for House Repubs. (This has started with Specter, Graham and maybe others. This morning I listened to a very brief bit of Neil Boortz on the radio. He's a typical radio right-winger. Immediately following the press conference he expressed skepticism about the legality/constitutionality of this.)

Public opinion polls need to show that most Americans favor impeachment because of this (or, I suppose, anything else). Not enough info now on the likelihood of this happening but it's certainly a logical possibility.

One or two representatives in blue and purple and even reddish-purple districts start to break by calling for impeachment, allowing for the prison break. This is perfectly feasible assuming all of the above (or whatever might substitute for them) occur significantly before Nov. 2006. This would give the Reps what they desperately need--separation/independence from Bush.

I'll be honest--I'm one of the moderates on this site. Despite my strong disagreements with Bush on most issues, I have yet to think we had a chance in hell of impeaching him for practical lessons. This is making me change my mind. This is the first of Bush's many mistakes (or whatever you choose to call them) that is morally, legally and practically impeachable.

What a powerful speaker and what an amazing intellect. I totally fell in love with this man. I am not at all surprised that he is taking this stand.

Thank you to a great patriot. :patriot:

58. Sorry, Not Going To Happen
While The Torture President deserves to be impeached, he's not likely to be impeached for this. He doubtless has a signed legal opinion saying he can do it - unless it can be shown that the lawyer signing the opinion was coerced, Bush'll be fundamentally OK - just a little more political bruising. And don't count on the coercion angle - if the Bush family knows one thing, it knows how to find and lock down hyperloyal supporters who are extraordinarily well compensated for playing ball.

He's more likely to go down on the Iraq War, if and when the heat becomes unbearable for the Right. However, the Right is in incredible disarray right now, and they don't want Darth Cheney to become President - he's hated even more than Bush - I don't think we'll have an impeachment for a year or so.

84. The "legal opinions" written by his staff are meaningless....
they do not supplant or override the Congress or the Constitution or any existing law...not really worth much more in the long run than a roll of Charmin.
In any case, impeachment is largely a political operation wrapped in the cloak of legality...his only real defense is twofold and entirely political. There isn't really a leg to stand on legally.

1. Has to maintain a majority in the House of Representatives
2. Has to have reasonable popularity ratings

Both looking pretty shaky at this point.... I agree with your point re: timing. Assuming we did take the House and popularity ratings remained low, with the normal expected delaying tactics we are still a good year to year and a half out on this, best case scenario.

61. "major" House figure
Just a question to satisfy my curiosity: They say Lewis is the first "major House figure" to call for impeachment. Who else has called for impeachment, and what makes Lewis "major" as opposed to previous people?

64. I'm not sure what "they" mean but...
Rep. Lewis represents much of Atlanta, a huge city in a large state, and he has considerable seniority in the House. Another Georgia Democrat with much less seniority, Cynthia McKinney, has also called for impeachment. Too bad the rest of Georgia (excluding us DUers) are red, red, red!

It's debatable that Lewis is a "major House figure" -- and it's not debatable that he's a "senator".

65. God Damnit, Democrats need to stop this Impeachment crap
If you START the arguement with OMG IMPEACH, the Republicans can IMMEDIATELY use it to claim its a politically motivated witchhunt.

It puts politically intelligent Democrats in the ackward situation of then having to disagree with their fellow democrats and say "We need an investigation".

AFTER the investigation, THEN start the god damned Impeachment calls.

Man, we need some leadership.

so that an inquiry can BEGIN to lead to the REMOVAL and IMPRISONMENT of the War Criminals.

Impeachment is not a determination of guilt or innocence, but the START of an OFFICIAL INQUIRY and trial in the Senate.

They found Clinton NOT GUILTY of the bullshit repuke partisan witchhunt charges they tried to get against him!

DEMOCRATS BETTER GET OFF THEIR BUTTS AND DO JUST THIS - NOW!

It's way over due.

You are completely wrong on this one.

But it won't do squat unless a democratic majority is returned to the congress - the repukes certainly won't do the "right thing".

stop with the complaints, "Where are the other Democratic Senators and Congress people?" or "Where are the war profiteering corporate news monopolies?"

Half the Democratic Senators and House members, and all of the war profiteering corporate news monopolies...

...voted for, or supported and propagandized for, giving George Bush the power to invade Iraq without a Congressional declaration of war--for the Congress people, an unconstitutional act, in violation of their oaths of office. (If they had not given this power away, then the debate in the UN, the evaluation of WMD evidence and the decision to take action all would have been the business of Congress, as it should have been--not Bush; Congress could have prevented the rush to war by merely doing their jobs and abiding by the Constitution; the news monopolies could have prevented the rush to war by insisting that Congress do its job, and by exposing the lies that the Bush regime was telling about WMDs, 9/11 and Iraq.)

...have provided virtually no oversight of this junta's numerous crimes, including torturing prisoners, sending no-name, faceless, un-people on black flights to torture dungeons in middle Europe and points east; inventing their own category of prisoner ("enemy combatant")--all in egregious violation of the Geneva Conventions, the Uniform Code of Military Justice and other U.S. laws; inventing their own laws as it suits them; larding their friends with billions of dollars in no-bid contracts; losing track of billions of dollars in Iraq; outing a CIA agent and putting her entire network of covert counter-proliferation agents and contacts in danger of being killed--an act of treason; lying to Congress and the American people, on numerous occasions; purging the honest and competent people in government--in the military, the intelligence agencies, and all other agencies, including FEMA, leaving us helpless as a nation should disaster strike again--and these are just some of their worst crimes.

...sat back and did nothing to investigate or remedy this regime's failure to defend our nation's capitol on 9/11, and its inability to even protect the Pentagon, with nearly an hour's notice, including the stand-down of the Air Force and NORAD, and failure to follow procedure on that day and on that day alone; and permitted the President and the Vice President to testify in secret with no notes and no recording devices, and not under oath, about this, the gravest attack on our country since Pearl Harbor.

...failed to apprise the American people of the origins of the Bush junta's plan to invade and occupy Iraq, in the document called "The Project for a New American Century" (PNAC), signed by many in the Bush regime, which basically lays out the program for a New Roman Empire, this time an American one, starting with the conquest of Iraq, which, the document states, may need a Pearl Harbor-like attack to get it jump-started.

...permitted Bushite corporations to gain control of our election system in the 2001-2004 period, with "trade secret," proprietary programming code, and virtually no audit/recount controls, in the new electronic voting systems; failed to object to it; failed to warn voters about it; failed to stop the use of such machines in the 2004 election, after suspicious results occurred in the 2002 by-elections; ignored a mountain of evidence of a wrong result for president in 2004; with the Democratic Party failing to provide independent exit polls or any verification tools for the election, and the war profiteering corporate news monopolies DOCTORING their own exit polls (Kerry won), late on election day, to "fit" the results of this non-transparent, Bushite-controlled election system (Bush won), thus hiding evidence of a Kerry win, and denying the American people major evidence of election fraud.

-------

And you expect these people to object to Bush violating the Constitution and spying on Americans?

Stop kidding yourselves. The above described people--half the Democratic Party leadership, and all of the war profiteering corporate news monopolies--WANTED this war, want to EXPAND this war, DON'T CARE ABOUT the cost of the war, or its illegality, or its injustice--the slaughter of tens of thousands of innocent people, and the deaths of over 2,000 U.S. soldiers--and PREFER a fascist country in which the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, in which we are reduced to slave labor and cannon fodder, and in which our civil rights and our Constitution are trampled in the dust.

They want it this way. They could have stopped it long ago. They didn't.

You can make rhetorical appeals to their patriotism and honor. That should be done on principle. But you shouldn't expect them to respond with anything but hot air and cosmetic measures, if that.

It's TOO LATE for half measures. Over TWO HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS has already been spent on this heinous, illegal war. The dead are DEAD. Possibly as much as ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND INNOCENT PEOPLE obliterated by our bombs (according to the British doctors' report). The Constitution has been ripped to shreds.

There may be strategies by which we can restore our right to vote, and gain back our sovereignty as a people, but DO NOT EXPECT the traitorous news media or the corrupt, collusive Democrats who have aided and abetted this junta, to help us do it.

Some may feel regrets. Fine. Some may even apologize (John Kerry did, on the Iraq vote). Fine and good. But we need to face the truth about how all this happened, and proceed on the basis of truth and reality. Because they WILL widen this war, and they WILL impoverish us, and they WILL lead us straight into a Hitlerian hell--or worse, given nuclear weapons--if we are unable to reform our election system and start electing people who represent US, the great majority of the American people, who want peace, justice, fairness, equality before the law, equitable taxation, and democracy.

Honorable John Lewis:

Although you are not my Congressional Representative, I wish to thank you for your decision to consider impeaching President George Bush.

Many, many Americans are in full agreement with you.

The President authorized the unlawful survelliance of American citizens.

This is a crime. T

he excuse of fighting terrorism is unacceptable since the FISA courts allow for oversights in such cases.

President Bush is NOT a King and he is NOT above the law. His administration must be held accountable.
