Most talked-about news in US: Katrina, oil prices

NEW YORK, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Hurricane Katrina and the spike in gas and oil prices were the most talked-about news stories in the United States in 2005, edging out the war in Iraq and the Asian tsunami, a survey showed on Monday.

According to the poll of 1,500 people commissioned by data and information company LexisNexis, 97 percent of Americans considered the August hurricane that devastated New Orleans the most talked about event at their home or office during 2005, followed by the gas hikes, the Iraqi war and the tsunami.

The London bombings in July took fifth slot, just ahead of the U.S. Supreme Court nominations.

Two human interest stories were next on the list -- Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged woman at the center of a battle over whether she should be kept alive, and Natalee Holloway, a teenager who went missing in Aruba.
