Democrats plan sharp rebuke of pre-war intelligence, Iraq war in massive new congressional report

House Judiciary Committee Democrats, spearheaded by Congressman John Conyers (D-MI), are set to release possibly the sharpest congressional critique to date surrounding Iraq, RAW STORY has learned.

The report, titled "The Constitution in Crisis: The Downing Street Minutes and Deception, Manipulation, Torture, Retribution and Coverups in the Iraq War," is slotted to be made available to the public Tuesday. RAW STORY acquired a copy of the book’s cover and some additional information about the document today.

According to Democratic aides, the report will focus on alleged manipulation of pre-war intelligence by the White House, specifically covering such topics as the Downing Street Minutes as well as the White House position on the Geneva Conventions and international law as regards its policies toward prisoners of war.

The ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, Conyers had previously pushed for an inquiry into the Downing Street Minutes, official minutes of a 2002 meeting among British Prime Minister Tony Blair, members of British intelligence MI-6, as well as Bush administration advisers. Most notably, the minutes included a comment from British intelligence director Richard Dearlove, who was quoted in a secret meeting before the war as saying "intelligence and facts are being fixed around the policy."

2. Oh, thank goodness it's Conyers
I saw the headline and was dreading what I would read (frankly I am unimpressed lately with a lot of these potentially good Dem plans) BUT Conyers is someone I fully trust on something like this.

So GO CONYERS GO!!! :bounce:

3. Gee, didn't Conyers listen to Lieberman?
Didn't Lieberman tell Democrats opposed to this war that Bush will be Prez for 3 more years, so live with it? </sacrcasm>

Love Conyers. This rebuke will be a "finger" towards Lieberman and a charge against Bush. Go Conyers. Keep laying the case for Impeachment.

8. Yep - last spring only 10 Dem senators signed the DSM letter of inquiry
that Kerry wrote to include it for further investigation into pre-war intel. Conyers had a majority of congress joining his letter.

I would bet that at least 40 other senators would sign it today, including a few Republicans.

9. "Plan sharp rebuke"?
How many more years are they gonna plan?

I guess if Conyers is on the case, something will actually happen. If it ain't impeachment, though, it might as well be campaign commercials.

What the rest of the Dems were doing about this....well, that's another story. But Conyers took the election problems VERY seriously, along with most of the CBC.

Democrats plan sharp rebuke of pre-war intelligence, Iraq war in massive new congressional report

18. Exactly... Does everyone realize what Levin did with the Torture statute?
Edited on Mon Dec-19-05 02:59 PM by radio4progressives
he co-sponsored an amendment with Sen. Lindsay Graham, which for the first time in United States History, authorizes the use of "evidence" obtained through Torture, to be used as EVIDENCE against that individual in a court of law, to prosecute and convict that individual.

Democratic Senator Levin co sponsored that amendment.

With Democratic Leadership backing legislatition such as this one - how in the hell can we as a people, as democrats, ever have faith that our elected officials will protect and defend our constitution to which they are sworn to uphold, protect and defend against all enemies foreign and domestic?

21. This sound almost exactly like
my film "Rove's War" which uses both the Downing Street Minutes Hearing as an anchor and the Plame Outing as it's framedwork.. this is all in the film.

Perfect. This ties in very well with my offer to give the film Free to any Congress person who wants one for informational purposes.

What a gutsy guy Rep. John Conyers is. What's happened to the rest of our Congress? We should impeach W now.

24. ummm
isn't this a day late and a dollar short?

the damage has been done. and sad to say, they were complacent the whole time.

i think it's time to wake up and realize the people we support in congress are just as corrupt as the people we don't support.

there needs to be an entire sea change for anything to actually happen to benefit us, the american people.
