Clinton seeks ways to protect New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is asking what has to be done to protect New Orleans from future hurricanes.

Clinton toured areas hit by Hurricane Katrina yesterday. The New York Democrat heard a U-S Army Corps of Engineers spokesman tell her that a breach at the Industrial Canal should be repaired just before next year's hurricane season. That breach was a key reason New Orleans flooded.

The Corps official told Clinton that unless the corps is authorized to strengthen the levee and given the money to do so, the levee likely wouldn't withstand anything beyond a Category Three storm.

Congress is considering 29 (b) billion dollars in hurricane assistance that would pay for levee repairs and upgrades.

1. That is a start
How about some aid to help folks rebuild their homes and lives?

2. The Clintons don't hate the poor.
They embrace people's differences. Bill is loved worldwide.

I'd like another Clinton in office.

4. I heard the other day
That Landrieu or Blanco--I can't remember which one--was going to Holland to look into a dike system for New Orleans.
But good on Clinton...we can't let New Orleans be lost, although in a paper I read pre-Katrina, it said that would be exactly what happened in the event of a major hurricane.
