Swiss first to allow assisted suicide in hospital

A Swiss hospital is to allow on-site assisted suicide for terminally ill patients, becoming the first in the country to allow the practice.

Euthanasia is permitted under Swiss law for patients who are mentally competent and suffering from an incurable disease.

But until now hospitals have refused to allow suicide on the premises.

"This is a culture change, I would speak even of a cultural revolution," said Dr Rene Chiolero, the hospital's head of intensive care and president of its ethics commission. "But it will only be used in exceptional cases. It will be very restrictive."
