Sen. Lott Weighing Re-Election Campaign

U.S. Sen. Trent Lott says personal losses he suffered because of Hurricane Katrina will weigh on his decision whether to run for re-election in 2006.

The Mississippi Republican lost his waterfront home in Pascagoula during the Aug. 29 storm.

"It was about half my net worth. I have a $400,000 loss after the flood insurance," the former Senate majority leader said.

"From a personal standpoint, I need a little more income. But the people I care most about, those on the coast, are hurting and need help," he said.

2. State Farm denied his claim.
Storm surge ain't covered for no good ole boy.
Now he knows how most of his constituency feels. Except their net worth is far smaller than $400K.

3. Lott's a Non-Player Anyway
MS may be in play, but even if it stayed Red, Lott was a useless cog anyway.

5. If he stays in the Senate
he will run for Leader again.

That's not exactly a non-player.

Even if he did win, he's damaged goods.

7. You assume too much - as though he understands the subtlety.
He hath tasted the waters of power within the bloatway, and
he hath hungered for a return to the golden shower.

18. Lott
holds the arguably most powerful chairmanship in the Senate (Rules Committee), not exactly a non-player.

If he runs, he will win easy re-election -- he won't have to campaign. If he doesn't run, his most likely replacement IMHO is Haley Barbour. Lott is 10X better than Haley.

8.  "so disappointed with the (Bush) administration's response.......
I guess Bush isn't going to be sitting on his porch any time soon.

(snip)
Another consideration, he said, is that he is "so disappointed with the (Bush) administration's response to this disaster that I'm almost embarrassed."

10. Still pissed about his treatment after the Thurmond birthday comment.
He's been semi-bitchy at the Bush administration ever since they distanced themselves from him.

11. Gene Taylor!
Course, his house was destroyed too, so who knows, but he's popular, conservative, but at the same time eager to take on the Bush Administration.

19. If Lott doesn't run it will be
because the "Invisible Coast" of the South, that destroyed region is something that the voters see EVERY DAY, they LIVE it, no water, no electricity no federal help - the Democratic South MAY just rise again after the way the Coast was treated down there..

You think any of those rifle rack gun toters are going to vote for a guy who FLEW IN on a GOV'T chopper to see how HIS house was doing while they are all chasing possums to eat like the Beverly Hillbillies, sow's ears aren't just for the dog any more.. they're DINNER..

No jobs, no rebuilds, hell, not even promised TRAILERS for the ones that Lost Trailers that were their homes.

This is spin, the South is now PISSED at lawmakers. Screw what they are doing to tha negroes fellas, NOW they're treatin' US white fellers like Negroes!

Like a song I once wrote:

"Ain't no matter 'bout the color of your skin,

It's whether you're on the Inside..

Or the Outside..

Lookin' IN.."

20. More from AP story...

" Lott told The Sun Herald newspaper that his
family is divided over his running again.

Another consideration, he said, is that he "so
disappointed with the administration's
response to this disaster that I'm almost
embarrassed."

***

Lott hinted that if he does seek re-election, he
might seek another leadership post.

Fellow Mississippi Congressman Chip Pickering, a
member of the House of Representatives, has
been expected to run for Senate if Lott or Sen.
Thad Cochran retire.
"

"Another leadership post"? Interesting....

But hell, whatever... we can only hope he doesn't run again.
