Report: Britain ran secret prison in Germany after end of WWII

LONDON - Britain ran a secret prison in Germany for two years after the end of World War Two where inmates including Nazi party members were tortured and starved to death, the Guardian said on Saturday.

Citing Foreign Office files which were opened after a request under the Freedom of Information act, the newspaper said Britain had held men and woman at a prison in Bad Nenndorf until July 1947.

Locals at the time said you could hear prisoners scream at night.

The Foreign Office files detailed an investigation carried out by a Scotland Yard detective, Inspector Tom Hayward, who found evidence of torture and said at least two inmates had starved to death while another had been beaten to death.

I wonder what the people who staffed that prison were told, that allowed them to believe their actions were noble and justified? I wonder how the cognitive dissonance didn't shear their minds apart?

At least the stories are coming out. The deaths in the year after the war tell another awful story.

4. When talking about 60 years ago...

...this shows that neither side was innocent of torture.

No, we don't condone it. We condemn it!

Yet, to selectively view one country's record (e.g. Israel or the US) would be a hypocritical condemnation. To claim that there is anyone who didn't react to torture with anger would be pretty false.

Did the Palestinians kill Jewish immigrants for sport? Did the Ottoman Empire banish Jews who came to settle the land, or was Arafat's PLO a peace loving mission. We have to own up to facts all around.

7. A few things...

First of all, the irony of someone i assume is Jewish using an incident of Nazis's and Nazi supporters being ill treated is not lost upon me. If your grandparents are alive i'd be fascinated to hear their opinions on this story.

It wasn't right then and it isn't right now. It does seem that the British government of the time didn't even know about this and had 3 people court martialed, although only one was found guilty. We don't know the details so we can't comment on wether this was fair or not.

Having said that, i wouldn't be suprised if the British starved and whipped Nazi agents caught in the UK. I wouldn't be suprised if they did more. In fact i think they did execute a number.

We condemn it!" Therefore, I am guessing you didn't see there was NO irony implied. As horrible as they were, they still deserved justice!

BTW...my grandparents are dead. They didn't die in the Holocaust because, as children, they came to this country because their parents feared what was happening in Russia (not German, here). However, their brothers and sisters (3 (B) and 2 (S), I think as I only have a few pictures), have no descendants I can ask.
