Patients were forced to leap from the windows of a burning four-storey hospital to escape a fire that killed at least 39 people in China, officials said yesterday.
Thousands of local residents watched helplessly as patients jumped from windows on the third and fourth floors in freezing weather after rescuers failed to reach them.
Yelling "catch, catch", a nurse dropped a 12-day-old baby out the window of the second-floor maternity ward and into the arms of its father.
Witnesses said firefighters struggled for five hours to put out the blaze that broke out on Thursday at the City Central Hospital, the largest hospital in Liaoyuan, 400 miles north-east of Beijing in Jilin province. Investigators believe the fire started in a power distribution room.
