Poll: Bush continues to get poor marks in Michigan

Only 36 percent give president a positive job rating
Kathy Barks Hoffman / AP Political Writer

LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan residents aren't pleased with the job President Bush is doing, although they give him higher marks for his handling of the war on terror than how he is handling the economy and Social Security and Medicare.

In a poll released Friday, only 36 percent gave the Republican president a positive job rating, while 61 percent gave him a negative rating and 3 percent were undecided.

Although some national polls have shown Bush's numbers rising somewhat, his Michigan rating remains nearly unchanged from November, when 35 percent gave him a positive job rating, 63 percent a negative rating and 2 percent were undecided.

Both polls were conducted by Lansing-based EPIC/MRA. The most recent poll surveyed 600 likely Michigan voters from Sunday through Thursday. The margin of error in both polls was plus or minus 4 percentage points.

1. How is there anyone left in Michigan that can support *? They just
lost 30,000 jobs and I heard Ford might follow suit and do the same thing. About the only jobs left are education and tourism. There is no way Michigan could possibly give * a double digit raing.

3. not surprising
Michigan has a lot of problems and the federal budget cuts to state programs hit Michigan hard. Plus every time you hear of job cuts in the automotive industry it means Michigan just took another hit. Our state economy is predominately manufacturing jobs, the same ones that are constantly being out sourced to other countries. We had 12 years of a Republican Governor, and the only reason things held together then was the booming Clinton Economy. When he left office at the end of 2002 he left us with a massive state debt that we have yet to recover from.
