US soldier killed in Afghan clash
A US soldier and a suspected Taleban fighter have been killed in fighting in the northeast of Kandahar province, US military says. US troops were on patrol with Afghan soldiers when they came under fire, a US military statement says.

US forces have this year suffered their heaviest casualties since they led the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. In another incident, a teacher has been shot dead by suspected militants in Helmand province, reports say.

'Sad day'

One US trooper and one Afghan soldier were also wounded in the fighting in Kandahar. They are in stable condition, the American forces say.

1. Afghanistan is pretty much as dangerous as Iraq
for the u.s. now.

a 1 in 200 chance of being killed during a 1 year rotation in Iraq, is roughly right(-ish).

There are about 20,000 troops in Afghanistan, 1 in 200 predicts 100 deaths. There have been 127 so far this year, up from averaging 50 deaths a year in previous years.
