State Department Announces International Journalist Fellows Program
By VOA News
13 December 2005

The State Department has announced a new program that will invite up to 100 foreign journalists to study at U.S. journalism schools and visit American news media organizations.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Tuesday said the program emphasizes underlying principles of journalism such as integrity and courage that make it a crucial element of any democracy.

Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen Hughes says the program is an example of the department's efforts to make exchange programs more strategic, focusing on people with wide influence.

Under the "Edward R. Murrow Journalism Fellows Program," named after the famous American news broadcaster and former head of the U.S. Information Agency, fellows will attend classes at one of six American journalism schools, visit American news organizations and participate in a symposium on issues facing the news media.

Did you ever think you'd see the names "Karen Hughes" and "Edward R. Murrow" in the same article? I know I didn't.

5. Condoleezza Rice launches program to bring foreign journalists to U.S.
No doubt, they'll be taught how to be "fair and balanced."

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday launched a program to bring foreign journalists to the United States so they can learn how to "tell the story of democracy" to their countries.

Rice called the program a partnership between the U.S. government and the media. The foreign journalists will attend seminars at a number of American universities, including the University of North Carolina, and observe American journalists at work across the country.

The announcement comes as the U.S. military under criticism for a controversial propaganda program that paid Iraqi newspapers to run favorable stories. An investigator has been appointed by U.S. military officials in Iraq to look into the program, even as they have defended it as part of their campaign to get the truth out about the war and reconstruction efforts.

7. Free education, free H1B, why not?
If people don't pay taxes and come from countries we're freely giving our infrastructure and secrets to, then they deserve more than a mere free ride...

As for those of us who pay taxes, well we're better off rotting in the gutter and pissed on because we're too lazy and stupid to get a job. They can keep their mindset. Won't do them any bit of difference in the end.

9. Keep them out of the slums... New Orleans... Mississippi coast,
definitely keep them out of the prisons, Fort Benning, chemical weapons labs, biological weapons labs as well, tactical nuclear weapons research facilities, nursing homes, veterans hospitals, facilities for the mentally ill and they should have nothing but great things to report back on the other side. Then again.... if some of them are from 3rd world nations, they will feel right at home in many locations such as they are.

10. Does it seem like Condomsleezy's role
is being expanded or at least publicized more? Gee, I wonder why? She's denied she wants to run for pres in '08 hasn't she? I'm sure she wouldn't lie about that. After all she isn't ambitious at all is she?

13. I thought the US was restricting foreign journalists.
Oh, wait, this IS a restriction: They can only "tell the story of democracy."
