Leading Sunni candidate killed in Iraq
A leading Sunni Arab candidate for the Iraqi elections, Mizher al-Dulaimi, was killed Tuesday in the volatile western city of Ramadi, an interior ministry source said.

Dulaimi headed a list of the independent Iraqi Free Progressive Party.

I wouldn't want to be a Sunni candidate in Anbar. Insurgents gunned down the freeking grand mufti of Fallujah for supporting the election.

Iraqi candidates.

When the report comes back and blames Iraqi elements, invade!

2. The civil war in Iraq
is well underway. I think we knew it would happen when we took the top off.

5. The Iraqi Free Progressive Party
was a liberal Sunni non-Baathist party that even has some Shia supporters. So, it likely wasn't the Shia militias.

6. I wonder how this country will ever work?
Middle East is full of tribes and they even like to keep marriage within the tribe. Then this rule of holy writing has not worked well. Turkey works pretty good but they had a war and a strong man to put it all in place and I do not think it is like a Western Dem. They also took the God stuff off the books. For the life of me I can not understand what Bush and Co. are doing.

7. The list system the UN told Sistani would be a good idea
was a mistake for Iraq.

That said democracy is simply having people elect other people to represent their interests and having those people debate the best way to lead the country and deal with issues like oil revinue and security.

Democracy can work almost anywhere, but mindset of the people getting elected may be very different then anything the US wants to see in power. In Afghanistan you have ultra conservatives who want to keep women covered head to toe being elected on mass because that is what the people know and want.

Democracy doesn't necessarily equal progress on human rights or other issues.
