Bush: U.S. will not allow Iran to dominate Iraq

Bush: U.S. will not allow Iran to dominate Iraq Mon. 12 Dec 2005

Washington, D.C., Dec. 12 – United States President George W. Bush announced on Monday that Washington would not allow Iran to mould Iraq’s political structures.

Bush told a gathering in Philadelphia World Affairs Council that Iraqis faced the challenge of maintaining their “newfound freedoms” in a “tough neighbourhood”.

“Iraq's neighbour to the east, Iran, is actively working to undermine a free Iraq”, Bush said.

The U.S. President in unusually harsh language said that Tehran was opposed to democracy prevailing in Iraq. “Iran doesn't want democracy in Iraq to succeed because a free Iraq threatens the legitimacy of Iran's oppressive theocracy”.

22. Iran having WMD's and a real army will keep us from invading.
Even at full strength, or army would have a difficult fight on our hands, and an insurgency even more fierce. Iran can shut down the Persian Gulf unless we secure it at the Straits of Hormuz.

9. I thought there were elections in Iraq. I thought it was a democracy now
and those who were elected, chose , apparently, to make friends with Iran. OMG, can't have that!

That friendship was Bush's fear or ignorance when he declared Iraq will be a democracy--and they all voted-- and it came true--Iran is friends with the leaders in Iraq.

What the hell is Bush the Iraq killer, doing interfering in this newly formed, elected democracy in Iraq? That ain't democracy--that is tyranny on the part of the United States.

10. The US alas has very little say in that
since the government we set up is overwhelmingly Shiite and their leadership leans to Iran anyway.

This by the way is one of the reasons that this ape's daddy didn't take out Saddam since he was afraid an Iraq with strong ties to Iran would emerge from the resulting chaos - which is what we see right now.

16. exactly!
Anyone with half a brain would have known that unseating Saddam would unleash the Shi'ite majority, and that it would only be a matter of time before Iraq would cozy up to Iran.

11. Bush wants to dominate Iraq all by himself
Iran will have a significant influence regardless of what Bush wants. A quick look at the map shows that. I doubt that the U.S. has the resources or will for another war, especially with Iran.

18. Plausible that this is intentional...
They certainly aren't doing anything to stop Iraq from becoming an Iran sympathetic Islamic theocracy. So they give themselves a reason to keep the military (and contractors) there to either "protect" Iraq from Iran or to simply expand the war to Iran.

They make a lot of money on this...

21. Will the Orwellian BushSpeak never end?

What he really means is that we need to keep U.S. forces in Iraq to thwart true democracy from allowing an alliance with Iran, which would really put a crimp in PNAC's masterplan. If only they would tell it like it is.
