Faux Poll: Bush Approval Rises (42%); Public Split on Pre-War Intel (44%)

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,177333,00.html

12/01/05 FOX Poll: Bush Approval Rises; Public Split on Pre-War Intel

NEW YORK — President George W. Bush's approval rating recovered a few points in the week's FOX News poll, though slightly more Americans still disapprove than approve of his job performance. On the issue of pre-Iraq war intelligence, roughly equal numbers of Americans think the president shared the best information available as think he intentionally misled the country.

Today, 42 percent of Americans approve and 48 percent disapprove of the job President Bush is doing. Bush regained 6 percentage points from his standing earlier this month of 36 percent approval — the lowest approval of his presidency (November 8-9).

...

"Some of the improvement may also be due to President Bush’s Wednesday speech on Iraq," comments Opinion Dynamics Chairman John Gorman. "Interviews finished before the speech show a 40 percent approval rate, while those done after the speech show 43 percent approval. If any of this is due to the speech it may very well be temporary."

...

Overall, the public is sharply divided on whether before going to war President Bush knowingly gave the wrong impression about Iraq's weapons capabilities: 46 percent think the president gave Americans the best prewar intelligence available and 44 percent think he intentionally misled the country about the presence of weapons of mass destruction.

4. That's because he has been avoiding us. His last speech was during
a time when not many people would see it no doubt on purpose. The less exposure he has the better he does.

6. I believe it.
Gasoline prices have dropped a lot and people haven't started getting their big home heating bills yet. For the sheeple it's all about gasoline prices. Everything else is noise. Notice the big jump in consumer confidence too. If gasoline keeps dropping Bush could get back to 50%. A lot of Americans are morons.

9. I look at gas prices and see "The Squeeze" not the "Economy."
Likewise, the stock market isn't the "Economy" it is the "Number's Racket."

31. The pollkatz guy investigated this and determined there was no bias
The results startled him, too. www.pollkatz.com

Regarding poll bias

30 June 2004

I, like many others, have long suspected that some pollsters may have their thumb on the scale, favoring Bush, in their polls. This would be foolish, of course, because the real bread and butter for the pollsters is in market research, where accuracy is more important than politics. Even so, that was my suspicion.

I was mistaken. I finally rolled up my sleeves and tested the hypothesis directly; not only were none of the results significant, none of them even suggested the swings I expected.

Pollingreport.com posts several "approval" polls from Bill Clinton's second term. I used this data to construct a "Clinton Index," similar to my Bush Index. To my wonder and amazement, I discovered that the rankings of the individual pollsters were not much different: Fox and Zogby at the extremes, everybody else clustered around one or two points. Most important, none of the ten pollsters in the database exhibited a significant, or even conspicuous, swing from Clinton low to Bush high (or vice versa). I'm convinced. The pollsters are honest, or at least deserving of the benefit of a doubt.

19. I too think it's real...and temporary
One must remember that a 5% bump is not unusual after a major address. After all, the reason his numbers dipped into the 30s in the first place was because he began losing his republican base (due to Katrina, ridiculous gas prices and Myers). He's probably got them all back.

No biggie. I think what this poll shows is: He's lost the independants for good. So the argument made above that he will be back at 50% is ridiculous. I think this poll shows that opposition to Bush is not necessarily based on specific issues anymore, but rather him personally.

P.S. That bump will probably dissipate in a week or two. Or if he does something else that pisses off the base. Bush has very little room to maneuver any more.

We have to look at the bigger picture and stop scoring polls like they were a baseball game. Republicans vote for and support Republicans. Democrats vote for and support Democrats. The independants make up the difference. The Republicans have lost the independants. Republican supporters want to feel reassured that their guy is not an idiot. Bush probably did that somewhat with his waning base supporters, but not the independants who took a chance on him. Republicans won't win anything with 42%. So whether he is at 37% or 42% makes no difference really in the larger scheme of things.

22. I agree that it's real
There's about a core 40-43% of the country that's die-in-the-wool puke supporters. The gas prices and Myers hurt him. He's gotten them back on board. But, I think he'll lose some of them when winter heating bills hit.
The real importance of those numbers are "How did he fare with Independents?" I think he's lost many of them that he had and will probably never get them back.

20. It is amazing to me
how someone's opinion can change for the better after a speech by *!
Just listening for 30 seconds scares me to death. Knowing that there are people who can change their mind back & forth over a few days does make me feel very positive about the voting public.
I just had to make my first post on DU to you, a Carolina Lady! I am also a long time Carolina beach bum. Hopefully we can help to turn Carolina BLUE next time!

25. Well one could have seen
this poll coming with a lil higher numbers since in their last poll they had him in the high 30's. Now on this one at 42 all the mediawhores over there can gloat and say the president is winning back the american people. Bullshit! With every major poll showing bush in the mid to low 30's this is where he will remain.....
