AP Interview: Romney says re-election delay hurts Dems, not GOP

CARLSBAD, Calif. --Gov. Mitt Romney said Wednesday he's in no rush to declare whether he will run for re-election next year -- a decision widely viewed as an indicator of whether he'll seek the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.
In an interview with The Associated Press before the start of a three-day Republican Governors Association meeting where he is set to assume the chairmanship, Romney said waiting as late as his promised deadline of Dec. 20, the end of fall, not only gives him time to win approval of a universal health care plan, but also hurts the Democrats hoping to succeed him.
"I understand that Tom Reilly is very anxious for me to make a decision, so it may well be that a relatively late process hurts his campaign. In which case, I'm delighted," Romney said with a smile. "My job is not to help the campaign of the Democratic opponent, so I don't lose sleep over that."
Reilly, the attorney general, said Tuesday that Romney's out-of-state travel had become a "distraction," adding: "At some point, make up your mind. Come or go. Stay. Run. Whatever. Just do your job."
