Officials wary of border uniforms made in Mexico (Security Concern)
http://www.news8austin.com/content/your_news/default.asp?ArID=150595

The labels inside U.S. Border Patrol uniforms have been making many federal agents feel uneasy.

It's not the fit or feel of the olive-green shirts and pants, but what their labels read: “Made in Mexico.''

Agents and lawmakers are concerned about the consequences if the uniforms for agents charged with combating illegal immigration fall into the hands of criminals or terrorists.

U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, worries about how easy it might be for people to cross the border if they stole a uniform.

1. They're already flooding across the border in droves.
I don't think where the Border Patrol uniform is manufactured is going to have a serious effect on that.

If he wants to see people crossing the border, he needs to go a little ways down south and watch at any time of the day or night. The Texas border is wide open. They don't even have those little "check-em" border control huts on the highways like they do in California.

Jeez Louise. If they steal a border control uniform, it's because they want to haul tractor loads of drugs. The border area is infested by drug lords.

Must be a press release from *someone* prior to the President's address in Tucson.

Customs officials say they haven't detected any security breaches or misuse of the uniforms. Strict security measures are in place, including on-site inspections at the Mexican plant.

For more than a year, the shirts and pants worn by agents and inspectors with U.S. Customs and Border Protection have been made in Mexico.

Ugh.

3. Kinda of a split opinion.
On one hand, I agree, we shouldn't have the uniform of any service personelle be manufactured outside of America...

They should also have RFID chips in all of them so they are assigned to the person and can be identified and a confirmable database that can be quiried by a nextgen version of a cell phone so the motorist can verify the cop is a cop and such as well, right down to a picture.

They _should_ clean up the boarder job first and actually do their fricking jobs in getting rid of the illegal aliens. The Country really doesn't need them, it wants them because they take peanuts for a steak job.

4. Idiots. If they can sew and knit, they can dupe any uniform.
Make them in China instead, it's harder to waltz across the border from there.

6. Why are Mexican contractors bidding on Federal contacts?
There are clauses in federal contracts demanding the use of domestic products.

This is another hidden cost of buying cheap overseas--oversight is lost.
