Poll: Americans back abortion limits, oppose ban
Supreme Court set to hear cases on notification, clinic protests

(CNN) -- Roughly two-thirds of the people questioned in a recent poll on abortion supported parental and spousal notification but opposed a constitutional amendment to ban the practice altogether.

The CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll conducted November 11-13 found that 69 percent of the 1,006 adults questioned were in favor of requiring minors to get parental consent to have an abortion, while 28 percent opposed that step.

...

In the poll, 64 percent said that wives should inform their husbands before getting an abortion, but 34 percent were against such a rule.

Despite the support for restrictions, 61 percent of those questioned were opposed to a constitutional amendment to ban abortion.

1. Not notifcation but consent?
In a perfect world I'd be for it but the world's not perfect.. and I don't see how a legal argument for that would fly...

2. That's a pretty small sample size,

and the methodology is not described.

And, interestingly enough, parental notification was just voted down in California (52.8%). (Whereas parental consent is supposedly supported by 69% in totals given for the poll.)

The mathematical rigor and ethics of pollsters are both subject to serious question.

But there is little doubt that the constant hammering of wedge issues by the manipulators has taken its toll among the weak-minded.

3. the propaganda hasn't been all that effective...

...if 61% are still opposed to an outright ban. No matter how they slant the questions, they just can't come up with a majority in favor of banning all abortions. I'm sure this has the rwingnuts sitting up nights, gnashing their teeth and rending their garments.

4. While I can understand why parents would want to know
I don't believe the law should require notification; and it certainly shouldn't require parental consent.

Laws like these will only drive teen girls to seek illegal abortions.

If I had a daughter, I'd want to know; and I'd hope that she'd feel comfortable enough to talk about her decision with me...knowing that I would respect and support whatever decision she made. But I would also want her to know that I respect her right to privacy.

6. Agreed 100%.
I oppose all abortion restrictions.

Neither parents nor partners--and certainly not busybodies in the larger society--should be informed about, polled for their opinion of, allowed to hinder, or otherwise have influence over the decision of a teenage or adult woman to get her abortion.

That's freedom. I'm for it. Is Politician X willing to curtail freedom in return for the American Taliban vote?

OK. No votes for Politician X, then.

5. "64 percent said that wives should inform their husbands"
What question did they ask? Did they ask if the law should require it?

7. If wives should inform their husbands...
husbands should inform their wives when their girlfriends have abortions.

9. that should tell you something about WHO
was sampled.

that response alone should tell everyone here that poll was rigged.

this fits perfectly with the rights drive to dismantle roe one regulation at a time.

10. SHOULD wives inform their husbands? In a healthy relationship, yes.
In the best of all possible worlds both partners would be able to discuss the matter and the woman would have the emotional and financial support of her husband. That's clearly the best scenario.

Unfortunately some relationships are not healthy and the wife may well be taking her life in her hands if she tells an abusive spouse that she is planning to have an abortion.

For that reason, a law REQUIRING a wife to inform her husband is unacceptable.
