High School locked-down after accidental release of dead Anthrax sample
Wilton-Lyndeborough High School under lockdown

November 22, 2005

WILTON, N .H. --Police on Tuesday locked down Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative High School after a pupil broke a microscope slide with dead anthrax.

Hazmat crews sealed off the building as a precaution.

School administrators were notified at 10:50 a.m. about the possible release of a small quantity of a toxic substance. Officials said the slide, about 25 years old, was treated with a preservative.

The Telegraph quoted a pupil who called the newspaper that the slow release of information frustrated many in the building. The student said no one had eaten lunch and everyone had been given only one opportunity to use the bathrooms.

2. We never got to play with Anthrax in high school.

The best we ever got was distilling alcohol once. And then there was the time the teacher asked someone to volunteer so we could all look at sperm.

Was there a reason to make a fuss over Anthrax that has been dead for 25 years?

And if so, should it have actually been made available for high school kids to use?

3. You had more fun in h.s. than I did.
We didn't get to distill alcohol OR look at sperm. I even had to wait until a college lab to make acetylsalicylic acid or anything fun at all.

x(

Anthrax that's been dead and fixed in preservative for 25 years is no threat to anyone. The whole panic attack was stupid and the lab teacher should have known that and been able to advise. Dumbasses.

5. We stabbed each other's fingers and typed our blood.
They probably don't get to do that any more, either.

Come to think of it, they shouldn't have trusted us with Anthrax.

9. Probably not.
We didn't get to do that, either. I had more fun and learned more in an after-school science club and doing science fair projects on my own than in any classroom.

Prank locks down Wilton-Lyndeborough high school

WILTON, N .H. (AP) -- Officials say a prank in a science lab prompted yesterday's four-hour lockdown at Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative High School in Wilton.

Police said an eighth-grader broke open a microscope slide that contained anthrax, rubbed the dead bacteria on his hands, then touched classmates. Hazmat crews sealed off the building and pupils were kept in their classrooms, as anxious parents gathered outside.

Officials said the slide was about 25 years old, and contained a preservative that would kill live bacteria. Health officials said there was no chance anyone could get sick from the exposure.

About 500 students and faculty were locked in the school between 11:30 a-m and 4 p-m. Police Chief Brent Hautanen said it took time to track down the source of the slide and confirm that the anthrax was harmless.
