Schmidt Breaks Silence On 'Cowards' Comment

CINCINNATI -- Freshman Rep. Jean Schmidt has broken her silence for the first time since her remarks in the House of Representatives started a firestorm last week, News 5's John London reported.

In a statement released shortly before noon Tuesday, Schmidt said: "I never meant to attack Congressman Murtha personally. I sent him a personal note of apology on Friday evening moments after my words. While I strongly disagree with his policy, neither Representative Bubp nor I ever wished to attack Congressman Murtha. I only take exception to his policy position."

Murtha's resolution would have forced the president to withdraw the nearly 160,000 troops in Iraq "at the earliest predictable date," while Schmidt claimed that the Democrats' plan was to withdraw troops "immediately."

She also said she's received thousands of supportive messages from her constituents in Ohio's 2nd District.

2. thousands of people
who believe that to want to end an endless war is an act of cowardice and who can't tell a Marine vet from Michael Moore?

It's times like this that I hate Cincinnati (I live here). Then I remember that there are way more than thousands of people here.

A caller on Randi Rhodes said this the other day and Randi confirmed it. You can get through by using a OH-2 zip code but your own address. Anyone try this? Anyone know some zip codes for her district? I'm sure many people could let her know that the politics of personal attack is over.

the calls and e mails she got from those who do not support her. She got two pretty nasty ones from me and I know many here wrote and called. Why would she feel the need to apologize if she got so much support?

Bullshit, she said what she said. No do overs here. She meant it and got called on her bullshit. Why can't any of them ever offer a public apology and admit that they were wrong? God I have no respect for these people, none.

9. "I pledge to... refrain from name-calling or the questioning of character"
Maiden Speech by the Honorable Jean Schmidt

Public Statements
Speaker: Representative Jean Schmidt (OH)
Title: Maiden Speech by the Honorable Jean Schmidt
Location: Washington, DC
Date: 09/06/2005

MAIDEN SPEECH BY THE HONORABLE JEAN SCHMIDT -- (House of Representatives - September 06, 2005)

(Mrs. SCHMIDT asked and was given permission to address the House for 1 minute.)

Mrs. SCHMIDT. Mr. Speaker, I stand here today in the same shoes, though with a slightly higher heel, as thousands of Members who have taken the same oath before me. I am mindful of what is expected of me both by this hallowed institution and the hundreds of thousands of Americans I am blessed to represent. I am the lowest-ranking Member of this body, the very bottom rung of the ladder; and I am privileged to hold that title.

This House has much work to do. On that we can all agree. We will not always agree on the details of that work. Honorable people can certainly agree to disagree. However, here today I accept a second oath. I pledge to walk in the shoes of my colleagues and refrain from name-calling or the questioning of character. It is easy to quickly sink to the lowest form of political debate. Harsh words often lead to headlines, but walking this path is not a victimless crime. This great House pays the price.

So at this moment, I begin my tenure in this Chamber, uncertain of what history will say of my tenure here. I come here green with only a desire to make our great country even greater. We have much work to do. In that spirit, I pledge to each of you that any disagreements we may have are just that and no more. Walking in each other's shoes takes effort and pause; however, it is my sincere hope that I never lose the patience to view each of you as human beings first, God's creatures, and foremost. I deeply appreciate this opportunity to serve with each of you. I very much look forward to getting to know you better, and I humbly thank you, Mr. Speaker, for allowing me to address this humble body.

"A few minutes ago I received a call from Colonel Danny Bubp, Ohio Representative from the 88th district in the House of Representatives. He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course," Schmidt declared from her lectern. "He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message, that cowards cut and run, Marines never do."

Claremont County and Jean
She was dead even with Paul Hackett, until the humidity* caused the counting machine to go "down." And when it came back up all of the remaining 90 precincts in Claremont County all went to Schmidt and @ levels high enough to stop any recount. (Claremont County also had 100% of their precincts go for bush in 04. Even the ones that went for Gore in 2000 and amazingly enough some that were predominately African American.)

41. Thanks, I knew predictable was the incorrect word., but couldn't
think of the term he used. They definitely messed up the meaning. Here I was willing to give them credit for clarifying that he wasn't calling for an immediate withdrawal. Now that you've jogged memory and got me thinking about the completely different meaning of the 2 words, I take back the credit. Predictable lends itself to that whole "measurable goals" discussion which is exactly what differentiates his plan from Kerry's or Gen. Casey's (IMO).

I thought Murtha did a great job responding to her "attack" when he just shrug it off as she's new, someone probably just handed her something to read.

I'm certainly not excusing her comments, just stating I thought Murtha handled it quite eloquently.

Hard to buy the "thousands of supportive messages" BS the way she's trying to push it. Supportive can have a lot of different meanings, not necessarily supportive of her message. I know I've gotten lots of supportive messages from family and friends in my life after screwing up royaly.

43. And now Bubp is backtracking via a GOP mouthpiece
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051122/ap_on_go_co/congresswoman_s_comments_1

Karen Tabor, spokeswoman for the Ohio House GOP caucus, said Bubp, a Republican from West Union in southwest Ohio, never intended his remarks to be used against another serviceman.

"I don't think he ever made reference to Congressman Murtha with Congresswoman Schmidt," Tabor said.

Bubp did not return calls to his office Tuesday seeking comment.

Tabor said Bubp was concerned that the remarks attributed to him by Schmidt, whose district is east of Cincinnati, would be taken as an attack on Murtha and American veterans.

They must have gotten an earfull from veterans to specifically mention they didn't intend to tick them off!

45. SCHMIDT’S REMARKS A DISGRACE ON CONGRESS AND AN INSULT TO THE NATION
After recovering from my initial shock and outrage over the incredible remarks of Rep. Schmidt, Republican, of Ohio, I felt compelled to express my disgust at this individual’s repugnant behavior. To insult and malign a decorated veteran of 37 years of courageous service to his country is to assault all veterans of all wars. Ms. Schmidt has seen fit to attack a man who has risked his life time and again for his country. I can ‘t imagine how it must feel to have sacrificed so much for your country and to then have to listen to such a despicable attack from one who has not committed herself to any public service, let alone put her life on the line for her country. This act by Schmidt was certainly one of the most obscene displays ever witnessed in the halls of Congress. Ms. Schmidt has brought shame upon the institution of the Congress. If she had any shred of decency, she would apologize, sincerely, to the members of Congress, to all veterans and to the country and then she should walk out of the building and give up her seat so a special election could be held to put someone of basic human decency in her place.

But since it’s obvious this person doesn’t harbor even a shred of decency within her, she will stay, an abominable excrescence on this legislative body. Ms. Schmidt seems determined to demonstrate her unique talent for verbally defecating from her mouth for all to see and hear. I can only hope she will confine further offensive displays to her circle of friends and comrades in the Republican Party. They seem to take a peculiar delight in these repugnant, shameful acts of character assassination and calumny. Maybe we should all send Ms. Schmidt a bedpan so she has something to speak into when she feels moved to utter further excretia.

Where does the Republican Party come up with these abject beings? This Party seems to be a magnet for them. Do they go trolling for wretched souls in dark quarters known only to them? Or do they install neophytes in special boot camps of punk politics where they transform them into mean-spirited wretches inspired only by misanthropy and despair.

Maybe they put ads in sniper magazines. They might look something like this:

The Republican Party seeks individuals for candidacy for public office. No intelligence, skills or aptitude required. Do you like to work with people, help people? Then go somewhere else. No trace of interest in public service is considered a plus. Little to no work involved. Once elected, lobbyist will advise or even write the laws for you and tell you what to vote for or against. Ample paid vacations (by lobbyists) year round. No campaigning skills required (although an aptitude for lying is a real plus), our party has extensive experience in fooling voters and subverting elections. (We campaigned in 2000 promising tax reductions for everyone and got millions of middle income suckers to vote for our candidates. Then, when we took the White House, we passed a tax law which gave most of the tax reductions to the very wealthiest in the country. Hey, they’re asking to be ‘taken’!). Those technically minded can get positions with our election subversion unit at Diebold).

Extremely good compensation, basic Government salary plus commissions and tips (many corporations and wealthy cronies pay very well for our services, basically undermining smart public policy and trading the public welfare for private profits by transferring public tax revenues to corporations and wealthy campaign contributors.) Opportunity for rapid advancement. Positions at the highest levels of government may be opening up soon (unless we can GET that dirty rotten, partisan, anti-capitalist, commie bastard, Fitzgerald). Paid training in techniques of disinformation, character assassination, misdirection and intimidation (our Neo-Con wing is loaded with the best in the business in these specialties). You learn how to work with network news people to help them to cover news events in a “balanced” way (advanced training in intimidation and subtle coercion by our Neo-con unit included).

Positions also available posing as journalists for assignment to the White House Press Corps, FOX News, ABC, etc. – You will file stories and reports frequently written by our own skilled (and Government paid!) propagandists and disinformation specialists. It’s fun! You’ll be treated like real journalists by television talk show hosts and interviewers.

For those going into television news positions you will be given training on how to properly deliver the news. We’ll even give you special terms and buzz-words to use such as “partisan political action” e.g.

“Well, on the - partisan politics front - the Democrats, again, raised questions about .. /How the President oversold the intelligence/ Tom Delay’s ethical troubles/ Karl Roves involvement in the Valerie Plame outing…/ Jack Abramoff’s involvement in defrauding…/ Dick Cheney’s involvement in…/” (take your pick) – Brian Williams – NBC News

As opposed to the non-committal delivery: “Tom Delay was indicted today and characterized the Texas D.A as an extremist and the indictment as a partisan political action. … And in other developments today…” – Brian Williams – NBC News.

Or, here’s a good one: “smell blood in the water” as in:

“Well, Tom Delay has been indicted, and the Democrats smell blood in the water.” __ Gwen Awful – PBS Washington Week

For those more inclined to work behind the scenes intern positions as Republican Congressional staffers are available. Work on all sorts of schemes of collusion, missappriation of public funds and malfeasance of duty. Your imagination is your only limitation. During election years, get in on fun field trips to intimidate elections board workers and voters. Experience rousing motivational speeches on voter intimidation and subversion of elections by such Low-Life luminaries as Katherine (“Eva Liebschen”, “Dirty Eva”) Harris, James (“the Fist”) Baker and Tony (“The Reign Maker”, “the Coronation Consiglieri”, “the Fixer”) Skalia.

Our party has demonstrated expertise in subverting elections, perverting the justice system and disrupting meaningful public debate of issues through EXTENSIVE use of techniques of disinformation, misdirection, and the application of the principle of the Big Lie. As a member of our party you must be able to develop a self-righteous tone of voice and demeanor while scrambling for cover: “Why, I am shocked, shocked I say, at these accusations leveled by the …/ District Attorney/ Special Prosecutor/ the Grand Jury/. This is obviously the statement of a fanatic. A fanatic, I tell you! I am shocked at such PARTISAN behavior!”

If you feel you have the qualifications or the character flaws to work for our organization, the GOP has a place for you in the Government.

Yes, the Republican Party seems to have a knack for attracting these wretched creatures. They are cleaning the streets of degenerates – and putting them in positions of power in our Government. Let's send Schmidt and the Republicans a message. Tell them she needs to resign her seat in Congress. Her further presence is a disgrace to the institution of Congress and an insult to America.

47. She adds insult to injury by lying further about what she did.
First, she says she didn't know Congressman Murtha was a marine. She used the word marine in her statement and addressed him personally. Now she says she never meant to attack him personally. We all heard her address him personally and besmirch his words as not being worthy of a marine. To top it off, the colleague she quotes has said he didn't say what it is she identifies him as having said. She is even lying (deceiving) when she talks about all the emails of support she is supposedly getting. She'd be barraged with negative emails if her official site allowed those who weren't her constituents to respond to her atrocious actions.
Those supportive messages, do they give her support for attacking a Congressman by name in the House, a clearly illegal effort, and do they support her personally besmirching his reputation as a 37 year veteran. Just wondering, what are their words of support, can she give us an example. Perhaps those so-called letters of support would be very illuminating.

She's so full of schmidt, she's an

mean jean or my eyes and ears?
" I never meant to attack Congressman Murtha personally."

Who did she think she was attacking or didn't she have bother to check out that the Congressman from Pennsyvania was a 37 year Veteran decorated Marine?

Vicious attack or plain stupid?

I also didn't know he was a marine, either - that's why I stuck in that quote about MARINES when I could have just as easily used another branch of our cowardly services!"
