WARSAW, Poland -- Greenpeace activists in small inflatable boats stopped a ship carrying genetically engineered soybean meal from unloading in a Polish port Thursday, the group said.
Several activists chained themselves to the ship, which was carrying 25,000 tons of the animal feed from Argentina, while others surrounded it in inflatable boats, preventing it from reaching harbor in the Baltic Sea port of Gdynia, Greenpeace campaigner Geert Ritsema said.
Greenpeace, which has staged similar protests elsewhere, says genetically engineered soy is causing massive environmental problems in Argentina, including deforestation, a dramatic increase in the use of toxic herbicides and soil infertility.
