McCain says Pentagon spending 'unsustainable'
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=3fe5e088bff8c284

Republican Sen. John McCain Tuesday said the massive Pentagon budget for the war in Iraq can't be sustained because of the need to replace weapons.

"We have unsustainable defense spending," said McCain, a chief proponent of military acquisition reform. "Refurbishment or replacement sooner than planned is putting further pressure on DOD's investment accounts. We cannot sustain the number of weapons programs that are in the program of record."

The Arizona Republican said the Defense Department spent $291 billion on the top five weapons systems in 2000 but the top five weapons systems in 2005 cost nearly $550 billion. "One of those top five systems, the FA-22, has seen unit costs increase almost 190 percent," he said

18. S'okay really. The whole economy is unsustainable.
The American people, myself included, have taken to gluttony with a sustained fanatacism that was beyond comprehension even twenty years ago. The whole damn thing is supported by never-ending loans from the future and imports from China.

It cannot last. Why not just let the whole thing collapse at once rather than nitpicking this one little bit.

:sarcasm off:

I'm sure I'll get beat for saying that in here, but I do. Don't always agree with him, but still can't help but like him.

6. Why would any Democrat like McCain
Don't fall for the MSM image - he's pretty RW and is not as clean as the media likes to pretend. He was one of the Keating 5 - who led to the S&L crisis. (He has more in common with Mr Potter than with George)

The Democratic wing of the party isn't falling for him.

13. For your info
McCain, along with John Glenn was CLEARED in the Keating 5 scandal.

The lies on this board are continuous.

He was never found to have done anything for Charles Keating, however the appearances looked bad. He turned his errors into Finance Reform, with Feingold, Shays & Meehan.

It hasn't worked as well as hoped, but he tried.

All politicians make mistakes...McCain is one of the few who admits his.

9. McCain helped get Bush re-elected
Any man who will sell out to help Bush get re-elected will NEVER EVER get my support or vote. He does just enough to fool SOME Democrats into thinking he's an OK guy. He's not.

24. McCain is a no good rotten Keating Five thief
who, along with his buddy Neil Bush, stole my grandparent's retirement account which was in one of their looted S&Ls. Never ever forget that McCain is a scumbag.

we cannot afford to take care of our flood victims. I have never trusted McCain, he's unstable. Ever since that picture of him hugging his benevolent leader, I have no respect for the man.

10. "Further pressure on DOD's investment accounts"?
Why doesn't the Defense Department invest in Halliburton? Just three short years ago, Halliburton was on the brink of bankruptcy, and might even have had to default on stock options and severance pay to its former executives. Now they're making more money than ever!

Or how about having an investment account with an oil company or two? They just had a very profitable quarter.

Soldier futures are way, way down, though.

28. exactly.
Unless, of course, we do away with all social programs including Medicare, Social Security, AFDC, WIC, all spending on roads, bridges and other infrastructure, everything except military spending.

But then again that's Grover Norquist's dream.
