CNN/SPACE.com: Hubble sees stars being born
Hubble sees stars being born
Friday, November 11, 2005

An image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows the NGC 346 star cluster.

(SPACE.com) -- A new image from the Hubble Space Telescope reveals stars in the process of being born amid a fantastic scene of wispy space structures and intense radiation.

The stars have yet to condense into small enough packages to trigger thermonuclear fusion, which is what powers stars, but they appear to be on the verge, astronomers said Thursday.

The setting is 210,000 light-years away in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way. At the center of the region is a brilliant star cluster called NGC 346. Arched and ragged filaments with a distinct ridge surround the cluster.

Radiation from the cluster's hot stars eats into denser areas, creating the features. The dark, intricately beaded edge of the ridge, seen in silhouette, contains several small dust globules that point back towards the central cluster, like windsocks caught in a gale.

Energetic outflows and radiation from hot young stars erode the dense outer portions of the star-forming region, formally known as N66, exposing new stellar nurseries....

1. Shame on those whose "God" is too small to encompass
the true, continuing creation of our universe. ("Is it the 7th Day yet? - Whew!")

4. Yeah..., but..., but...,
The universe is only 6000 years old. god already finished making it. There might be a glitch in the digital camera. Yeah, that's it, a glitch... I'll check with my minister and I bet he'll agree.

5. Hmm, that's a thought to ponder.
Sounds like you've been deep in thought. :hi:

I've often wondered what points I could make about that subject.

7. I actually think the Bible's creation myth...
like many other creation myths, has a lot of validity in scientific terms. I don't understand how some have veered off into the idea that the universe is far younger than it is, as referenced downthread. I think there's some ancient knowledge in these stories, like the Great Flood, which appears in more than Christian mythology.

14. The verdict's still out on Noah's Flood (maybe)
There are some theoretical archeologist/geologist types who speculate that the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean were once separated by a giant berm, with the level of the Red Sea much lower, and bordered by fertile farms. Then the berm was breached, the Red Sea rose... poof! Submerged farmfields. Big Flood. Cue the ark.

If it weren't a Friday night, I'd pin down this stuff, dangit.

I don't swallow that stuff about the universe being created in six calendar earth days... and I doubt if a Supreme Being communicated with our ancestors atop Mount Siani or from burning bushes. I'm a firm believer in science and observable facts. But the Flood? Wouldn't rule it out.... interesting food for thought.

15. God's sense of time
A man: God, how much is a million dollars to you?
God: It is but a penny.

A man: God, how long is a million years to you?
God: It is but a second.

A man: God, could you please give me a penny?
God: Sure, just a second.

17. Interesting indeed --
and re. creation, I meant not calendar earth days, but the order in which things came to be. I think some of the myths have that about right.

22. I hadn't heard that hypothesis before
The one I heard, and saw a show on TLC or Discovery channel about, was the flooding of the Black Sea basin after the glaciers began to melt at the end of the last ice age.

Of course, I also saw another show that recounted how an ancient Sumatran or Egyptian flood story could have occurred and been the source of Noah's Flood story.

6. A real pity they've decided to let the Hubble die
instead of keeping it active. Imagine all the wonder and glory we'll miss seeing because it's been tossed into the cosmic dumpster.

13. As usual CNN is right on top of things.
I saw pictures of stars being born from Hubble 5 years ago.I had one as a background on my computer at work. What's the matter, doesn't Herr Karl have anything for CNN to spin?
