Santorum blames media, White House for war's unpopularity

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Sen. Rick Santorum took a rare swing Friday at President Bush, saying the war in Iraq has been less than optimal and that some blame for that lies with the White House.

Santorum, a conservative Republican and usually a strong Bush ally, said the unpopularity of the war should be shared between the White House and the media.

"Certainly, mistakes were made," Santorum said of the war's conduct. "But that's a criticism you can make of every conflict."

...

He said Bush made a mistake by labeling it a "war on terror," which Santorum equated with calling World War II a "war on blitzkrieg."

"Terror is nothing more than a tactic," Santorum said.

12. So Santorum analogizes "unpopular" with "abysmal failure"
Edited on Fri Nov-11-05 04:49 PM by Divernan
What a whussie term to use to describe the war. "Unpopular" is how junior high girls describe someone they don't like (she's soooo, like, unpopular), or it could refer to a a fashion gone out of style. Typical neocon, sucking-up - to military-industrial -lobbyists thinking, that believes that war can ever be "popular" to begin with. To them war is not about human suffering on both sides and the destruction of a whole country - it's about making record-breaking, horrendous, blood-soaked profits, and that's ALWAYS popular with scum like Santorum.

19. Right! Because Bush is technically a "veteran"?
Hah! As I recall, Santorum's dad was a civil service employee of the VA - doesn't that make it particularly despicable for Ricky to back slashing benefits to vets. Evidently some father-son issues there, just like Bush One and Two.

24. If he gets job as lobbyist, Dems should refuse to meet with him.
And when the Dems are in the majority, that would be the kiss of death for Santorum as a lobbyist . Given the nasty games Rove et al played with forcing the DC, K Street lobbying firms to only hire Republicans, it would be a fitting quid pro quo.

43. Santorum is plagiarizing Mel Goodman, 7/22/05 Dem hearing on Plame outing.
Sorry I don't have a link, but I liked what he said so much I wrote it down:

"Terrorism is a tactic. FDR didn’t declare war on blitzkrieg, he declared war on Germany."

Goodman is a former senior CIA analyst, now with the Center for International Policy.
