Top Ohio labor mediator fired over boozy incident
He slept in state car littered with liquor bottles

Columbus - The chief mediator for the agency that enforces Ohio's collective-bargaining law has been fired after being found asleep in a state vehicle that was littered with liquor bottles and carrying fictitious license plates.

The State Employment Relations Board terminated Dale A. Zimmer, head of SERB's Bureau of Mediation, on Thursday following a pre-disciplinary hearing. He had been on paid leave since Oct. 31, the day he was arrested.

Zimmer, 52, had worked for SERB since April 1999 and was being paid $78,146 a year. His attorney, Doug Kennedy, said he could not discuss the case.

State Highway Patrol Trooper Todd McDonald arrested Zimmer after finding him asleep at the wheel of his car at a Belmont County rest stop at 12:08 a.m...

1. odd thing that license plate
driving a state car, but using his own license plate for a 1997 Taurus. What is up with that? Something go wrong with the other plates (get tickets on them? it got stolen in an embarassing fashion such that he didn't want to report it?) There has got to be a story behind the "why" of that little detail.
