GOP memo touts new terror attack as way to reverse party's decline
A confidential memo circulating among senior Republican leaders suggests that a new attack by terrorists on U.S. soil could reverse the sagging fortunes of President George W. Bush as well as the GOP and "restore his image as a leader of the American people."

The closely-guarded memo lays out a list of scenarios to bring the Republican party back from the political brink, including a devastating attack by terrorists that could “validate” the President’s war on terror and allow Bush to “unite the country” in a “time of national shock and sorrow.”

The memo says such a reversal in the President's fortunes could keep the party from losing control of Congress in the 2006 midterm elections.

GOP insiders who have seen the memo admit it’s a risky strategy and point out that such scenarios are “blue sky thinking” that often occurs in political planning sessions....

1. Why am I not suprised?
I don't believe that 9/11 was LIHOP, but I'm not so sure about the next terrorist attack.:scared:

ar. Their plan was to politicize the 2002 Midterms with terror, and it worked.

5. agreed. privately you bet they're thinking about it.
But if it's made into a written document and uncovered, heads are going to roll.

7. Check out this paragraph:
"Other Republicans, however, worry that such a scenario carries high risk, pointing out that an attack might suggest the President has not done enough to protect the country."

This sinks any possible chance that the next terrorist attack will be MIHOP (I don't believe that they can pull one off anyway) and especially after Katrina sunk his numbers in preparedness I don't think that Bush would take such a gamble.

10. And I don't think it "validates" Bush's war on terror either.
If anything another attack would punch a hole in the 'fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here' mantra once and for all.

14. If Cheney faces indictment, you can bet he would MIHOP all over
the place to have an excuse for Martial Law and keep his ass outta the slammer. He does not care about anything but his own criminal cabal. Over 2000 US troops and untold thousand innocent Iraqis already dead for his purposes. Why think he has ANY inhibitions? He has never given that impression.

15. I have trouble taking this information at face value for that reason.
I saw this posted on another thread recently and I think there were the same problems. It shows from katrina that that expectation isn't true anyways. After the hurricane, his approval just dipped even lower...

16. I like tinfoil hats as much as the next paranoid
but I gotta tell you I don't this gang is capable of pulling off something like this. The more I think about it the less I subscribe to LIHOP. These asswipes have fucked up everything they tried to do. They even fucked up fucking up social security for chrissakes. I don't think they could organize a panty raid let alone orchestrate something as complex as a large scale terrattack. I mean yes they are evil but they are far more incompetent even than evil.

31. This gang pulled off the theft of two presidential elections
Gained the House and the Senate and are now shaping the SC for the next generation. They've actually done pretty well for a pack of criminals.

The more I think about it the more I subscribe to conspiracy. They just pushed too hard to fast and are now hanging by a twig over the canyon.

Looks like we're vindicated more with each passing day.

And still the sheeple and whore media give this bunch the benifit of the doubt?!

They should be screaming for ALL their removal from the top of their lungs!

But all this quite posturing is tacit approval of the plan.

29. Prediction: another attack would yield Bush Impeachment
Think about it. Bush policy defenders say we're in Iraq to fight the war over there instead of over here.

If another attack happens on Bush's watch, America will blame Bush for not making us safe. I think even my parents would turn against him.

This article is a bunch of pipe dreams anyway. MIHOP will not happen. People are paying too much attention to it now to let that pass.

32. Bush/Republicans - Wouldn’t it be nice
Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a terror attack
Then we wouldn’t be out of power too long
And wouldn’t it be nice to be voted back in
In the kind of world where Bush belongs

You know it’s gonna make it that much better
When that attack keeps us together

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the bombs all go boom
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close in the Situation Room

Happy times together we’ve been spending
I wish that every attack was neverending
Wouldn’t it be nice

Apologies to the Beach Boys.

33. I;m not sure I have the proper reserves of cynicism to deal with this:
It was a lot easier in HS, when sarcasm and cynicism were the natural defenses against that alien out-of-touch adult world. Hell, I remember being tagged as editor for a theoretical never-published HS newsletter by the name of "The Baneful Sarcasmer." A natural gift it was.

But these days, "younger than that now," I am at a loss to understand whether the usual suspects are inviting or fomenting an attack on our home turf. Are we back to August 2001? How much intel has to be ignored, how many weeks of brushcutting (in November??) can George get away with? Can FBI and CIA be counted on for "Get Smart" - level pratfalls?

How about if they just find a new asteroid with a disturbing path - wouldn't that work just as well?
