House to probe CIA prisons leak

WASHINGTON - The House Intelligence Committee will look into a possible leak of classified information about secret CIA prisons but will not heed the request of the panel's top Democrat to restart a 2003 inquiry into prewar intelligence on Iraq.

As Democratic calls for intelligence-related reviews grow on Capitol Hill, a Republican congressional aide said work on the botched prewar Iraq estimates will stay with the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is in the second phase of its investigation.

The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because the lawmakers had not yet made the announcements.

The House Intelligence Committee, chaired by Rep. Peter Hoekstra, already has been investigating leaks of classified information. The Michigan Republican was not immediately available to comment.

Okay, I'm giggling.

This should go over SO well.

House to Probe CIA Prisons Leak
By KATHERINE SHRADER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The House Intelligence Committee will look into a possible leak of classified information about secret CIA prisons but will not reopen its 2003 inquiry into prewar intelligence on Iraq.

As calls for intelligence-related reviews grow on Capitol Hill, Rep. Peter Hoekstra (news, bio, voting record), R-Mich., said Thursday his committee will study several specific leaks of classified information, including a Nov. 2 Washington Post story that discussed the existence of secret CIA prisons overseas.

The story said the "black sites" were in eight countries, including democracies in Eastern Europe. Hoekstra would not confirm the story's accuracy or whether the prisons exist.

"The depth of the leaks that we have seen in the intelligence community over the last 12 to 18 months have done irreparable harm to our ability to effectively conduct the war on terror," Hoekstra said.

6. Good! I say let them investigate.
The only way they could bring charges of leaking classified information is if the charges are actually true.

Bringing charges would be PROOF these gulags exist.

This a huge mistake on their part. If they had just laughed it off, instead of trying freaking out about a leak is basically showing their cards.

8. Why are they investigating the "leaks?"
Shouldn't they be investigating the existence of Bush's gulags?

This is like the Abu Ghraib outrage. Bush has no problem with torture, only the revelation of torture.
