"We all feel betrayed," Sgt. Jeremy Tendler, 25, said. "And I like the Army. Being in combat was worthwhile. We had a mission then. But this is not a mission. . . . Rumsfeld gives the standard Washington doublespeak, and we get stuck here."
It is a common and increasing grumble from troops who said they expected the war would be short and victory sweet. Many spoke about the storied 100 hours of the 1991 gulf war. Many expected to return home to a hero's welcome.
"I don't even call home now because when I do, everybody's crying," said Spec. John Cadle, 22, who has been married for 10 months and deployed in the region for nine. "I want to call home but I hate to hear my mom cry. It makes me want to punch things."
"Re-enlistment," he added, "is a cuss word right now."
