Grassley: no Social Security reform now
Iowa Senator says Bush's overhaul is off the table until after the next presidential election.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Social Security system reforms may have to wait until 2009, the Republican Senator leading the effort said Tuesday.

Following a meeting at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said that he did not expect fellow lawmakers to pass Social Security reform legislation until after the next presidential election.

"I can't even get a consensus among Republicans," he said, according to a Grassley staff member who in an e-mail confirmed comments reported earlier.

President Bush proposed Social Security reforms in his State of the Union address earlier this year, encouraging the creation of individual investment accounts that he said would help boost the program's solvency.

Get rid of it altogether, and we can ALL pay a lower rate.

5. Will the media paint this as a big Democratic win?
Unlikley. You see, the Dems "have no vision," or so they say. The continuing success of social security, and the massive Bush failure at selling his cynical alternative, do not cut the mustard as a "victory" in the eyes of the craven Bush media.

6. Excellent....Bush spent all his "political capital" and wastes 25% of his
second term, only to have Grassley tell him to give it up! Good news.

11. Doesn't matter what he does, -when Sen Grassley deserts him, its over
Bush can whine all he likes, but Republicans are gonna start dropping him like a hot potato if we win like I think we will today.

8. Bush, Cheney and GOP is stealing our SS money big time!
Edited on Tue Nov-08-05 03:00 PM by Rainscents
I heard today on C-Span, GOP is stealing from SS 200 billions dollar a year since they took the office and this number is hidden from the public. I'm shocked! :wow:

10. In other words they will continue sinking SS without trying to fix it
Edited on Tue Nov-08-05 03:10 PM by superconnected
it's part of bush's no accountability spending plan.

The next prez will be blamed for all the money bush spent and for changing SS. We can only hope it's a dem. A repug will cut the program all together.

This announcement is because Bush doesn't want his ratings to drop by touching social security. See, he's a hero, he won't change it... the next guy HAS to.:sarcasm:

12. How much of our money has been wasted on this train wreck?
It needs to be deducted from *bush's paycheck, and returned to the fund.

being force fed to the seniors by the private sector, that would be a good thing, too.

19. Not really its still an a major topic
If we raise it in the next election. Seniors and Baby Boomers are the most consistent voters, and if we remind them that their Republican Congress-person or Senator supports privatization, then they will turn their backs on them. Also, wasn't there a declatory vote earlier this year that reaffirmed Social Security's sucess as a program, and that there was no problem? A lot of Repub Senators voted against it, including Rick "Man On Dog" Santorum. Could someone find this out for me>

20. Great strategy, but the Dems should be asking...Can you really
trust that they won't return to giving your money to the robber barons of Wall Street if they are in control after 2006.
