Atlanta J-C: Reed's fees all paid by casino
http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/1105/02reed.html

Looks like the Journal-Constitution got the scoop on this. Also, they mention, although at the end of the article, the "wacko" comments made by DeLay's aide Scanlon.

WASHINGTON — Ralph Reed's anti-gambling work in Texas and Louisiana was funded by an Indian tribe that derives all of its income from a single casino, according to U.S. Senate testimony Wednesday.

Reed, the former Christian Coalition leader who is running for lieutenant governor of Georgia, is an avowed opponent of legalized gambling. He has said he never knowingly accepted gambling money.

But Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who hired Reed to manage the campaign, made it clear to Reed that he was working for the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, according to a Feb. 11, 2002, e-mail released after the hearing.

<SNIP>

In an e-mail sent to Kathryn Van Hoof, a former outside lawyer for the Coushatta tribe, Abramoff's partner, Michael Scanlon, boiled down Reed's importance to the project: "Simply put, we want to bring out the wackos to vote against something and make sure the rest of the public lets the whole thing slip past them. The wackos get their information the Christian right, Christian radio, e-mail, the Internet and telephone trees," Scanlon wrote.

More can be learned about these memos, and how to contact Christian talk radio about this here: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/11/3/21544/6648

4. Don't trust Reed to fade away.
He caused Max Cleland to lose by smearing his "patriotism". He calls himself "Stealth" and is proud of his behind-the-scenes roll for the Republican "cause". I'd like to know how much money he earned as a consultant to Enron?

2. The Wackos LOLOLOLOLOL
These dumb right-wingers let these corporate crooks manipulate their self-righteousness, and Scanlon et al aren't even gracious enough not to refer to them as Wackos. Good, I hope a lot of right-wingers see this, and realize that the GOP does not have the interests of the Lord at heart. Nominated.

is considered a troll and they're "ZOTTED". The truth will not be tolerated at freeperville, ardently adhering to the party talking points is mandatory for a successful stay at FR. Do not, under any circumstances, stray from the prescribed propaganda if you wish to remain a freep.

11. Churches use them for prayer chains and info.
The pastor would contact an elder or deacon, then the deacon would call a couple of group leaders under them and they would then call the rest of the congregation (or subgroup leaders if a mega-church).

10. The majority of the public needs to be ignorant, according to Scanlon?
Tom DeLay admires men like this since Scanlon was his top aid and spokesman before leaving to be a lobbyist The word "secret" comes to mind----in other words, whatever we can get away with, we'll do. The big smile on DeLay's face is such a sham.

This is both sick and funny. I mean, I KNEW the fundies were being exploited by GOP politicians, but I never thought I'd see such glaring evidence of these people's contempt for them. This is their base they're talking about!

15. Does everyone see the bigger picture concerning the media and the neocons?
For decades the Republicans have claimed the media was liberally biased. There may have been a touch of truth to that at one point, but since deregulation of the media in the 80s and 90s, the MSM has clearly been conservatively owned and biased. Yet still idiots like Rush and O'Reilly and the rest push the lie that the media is liberal.

Notice the email: "The wackos get their information the Christian right, Christian radio, e-mail, the Internet and telephone trees..."

They don't listen to the mainstream media because the media they do listen to tells them it's biased. THAT is how they control the fundie right, and how they ensure they have a constituency that can't be turned. These are voters who have turned off everything but the little voice which tells them to support BushCo and the right wing.

The rest of the email reveals the rest. They set up these offyear bond elections expecting low general turnout and heavy base turnout. That's how they win their bond packages, their school board positions, etc. THAT's how they win all the local stuff, which allows them to control so much of local government. They suppress the general voter while encouraging this rabid branch of voters.

Kind of like that Jet Li movie, where he was the collar. He's been trained to hear only the voice of his trainer, and to do whatever he says.

All this explains FOX's "Fair and Balanced" slogan or O'Reilly's "No Spin Zone" title and all the other constant digs at the "left wing media." They know it's not true. They aren't trying to convince us, or even moderate independents. They are trying to convince that rabid base, because that allows them to control their minds, and makes sure they have the rabid voting block in place when they need it.

17. There is another part to that...
By claiming that the media is liberal, they plant the notion to anyone who would like to consider themselves to be "centrist" or "mainstream", that they must be to the right of the media in order to be in the center. But since the media IS center-to-right anyway, some of these people may end up being conservative- even if they don't call themselves one or recognize it.

On the outside, whitewashed sepulchres look nice, but inside they're filled with corruption and filth. Many will come claiming to speak in Jesus' name, but don't believe them if their actions don't match their words.

20. And the wacko's say, dum, de dum, de dum....
...Down this way the 'wacko right' still won't bring themselves to believe that they've been, and are being, played for fools. They've already started their 'liberal' newspaper hits on the AJC. Strange to think of it in those terms - after all Ralph McGill's been dead for almost 40 years and the paper's owner's, the Cox family, cornerstone radio station features the likes of Hannity, Savage and is the originating station for Boortz...hardly left-leaning any longer (they too have sold their principles for a few tax cuts).

Regardless, some folks have some semblance of a conscience left and are going to call Reed for what he is. The fact remains that the repigs are beginning to believe that with Reed on the ticket the repigs will lose their asses next year, so wouldn't be surprised that they're the ones behind the effort to ridicule Reed to the point that he'll either go to jail or quit the race 'for the good of the party'.

Regardless, the dems absolutely need to make sure that whoever the repigs put up for office next time, they get painted with the 's**t-ladened' brush that Ralph Reed created. By the way, if it weren't for the fact that it would have been a slap in the face of the gay community here, the SOB would have long since been 'outed'.

"What does it avail a man to gain a fortune and lose his soul?"

I have nothing but contempt for a man who calls himself Christian, turning from the path with such a vengeance.

23. Maybe we should start targeting local pastors with this information
Plenty of fundie churches around here - the types that would have phone trees and "voter guides" for their parishoners. Maybe we should organize lists of pastors of influential churches and send them articles such as this. My mother belongs to one of these churches, and I cannot get through to her any other way. If her church says it, she will never question it. So maybe the thing to do is educate the pastors.

28. Check out this Republican/freeper/fundy in denial LTTE in Friday's AJC:
Edited on Sat Nov-05-05 03:51 PM by CottonBear
"I can't believe the Atlanta Journal Constitution bashed Ralph Reed again Thursday morning on Page One. It is so obvious what you are trying to do.

Reed may have made some mistakes, but not intentionally. I will vote for him for lieutenant governor, and I hope everyone else does and sees through your attempt to smear him."

Gilda L. McCarty
Acworth (GA)

:eyes: :wtf: :( Really? What is so obvious, Ms. McCarty?
The AJC is simply reporting the truth and the facts and the radical, right wing Reed supporters can't handle the truth. That's what's obvious. I'll bet that this woman watches FOX News Network and listens to WSB 750AM's daily broadcast of Boortz, Hannity and Savage.

(I typed this LTTE verbatim from the Friday nov. 4, 2005 paper that I've got here.)
