AKRON, Ohio (AP) —

...Judge Edna Boyle, appointed last December by Taft and running for election this year, on Thursday denounced the ad, saying it exaggerated her black features in a racist manner. Others drawn in the ad are Judge Alison McCarty, Judge Kathy Frazzini Culver and Clerk of Courts Jim Laria.

The facial features of everyone in the golf cart are exaggerated in the style of political cartooning...

But Ohio Democratic Party spokesman Brian Rothenberg said it is not unusual to see cartoons in political ads.

"I think the ad itself is simply talking about the play-to-play atmosphere in Summit County and in Columbus. I think Edna Boyle is trying to create an issue, and the material isn't about race," he said.

(oops,this was is wrong ad-)

Judge Edna Boyle denounced this Ohio Democratic Party ad, saying it exaggerates her features in a racist manner.

Judge calls election cartoon racist

Edna Boyle denounces Democratic Party ad; Democrats reject claim as political

By John Higgins

Beacon Journal staff writer

An Ohio Democratic Party ad mailed to Akron area voters this week offended an African-American municipal court judge, who is caricatured in a cartoon depicting local incumbents riding in a golf cart with Gov. Bob Taft.

Judge Edna Boyle, who was appointed by Taft last December, called a news conference Thursday at the Sojourner Truth Building in downtown Akron to denounce the ad, saying it exaggerated her features in the manner of racist caricatures of the past.

The ad shows a cartoon of Boyle, Judge Alison McCarty, Judge Kathy Frazzini Culver and Clerk of Courts Jim Laria. The three judges all were appointed by Taft; Laria was appointed by the local Republican Party. Laria and McCarty have since won elections for their positions.

In the color cartoon, all four ride in the cart, driven by Taft, across a golf course as loose cash and coins tumble out -- references to Taft's August conviction for accepting free golf outings without reporting them and to several investment and campaign finance scandals involving Republicans...

I was talking to two members of his team last Sunday. When I mentioned that Larry Householder was missing, they said he was going to be on the next one. I hope, I hope.

They gave me a poster. I can't find a signature on it.

11. Edna Boyle in real life
Edited on Fri Nov-04-05 06:50 PM by rocknation

The only thing that looks overly exaggerated to me is her skin color. But given that the artist was most likely working with markers, I suspect that was done to make it clear that she's darker-skinned than the others, nothing more. Is THAT what she's really offended about--being portrayed as a "pure-bred" African-American?

On edit: Here are McCarty, Culver, Laria, and Taft. Malicious exaggeration? YOU make the call!

12. oh, excellent, rocknation
I loved looking at the pics and then the caricatures. That is a damn good caricature!

The beady-eyed one could have come off looking really bad but the caricaturist was kind.

repukes never deserve a break.

Thanks for putting those pics together.
