US Ambassador John Bolton has said he wants another UN resolution forcing Syria to withdraw any intelligence agents it keeps in Lebanon.

"We certainly see a resolution that continued to push for full implementation of 1559," Bolton said, referring to the measure adopted in September 2004 demanding the withdrawal of foreign forces from Lebanon and the disbanding of militia.

He said such a resolution would not be drawn up for several weeks. "The conclusion of 1559 that Lebanon should be restored to full sovereignty and territorial integrity has not been met," he said.

Russia and other Security Council members have indicated they are unwilling to support further action

How does one supply Iraq if one doesn't have Syria? Jordan might be the way, but we'll have to brutally crush a country that's been pretty mild of late. Turkey isn't reliable. It's not even close to reliable. This leaves two routes: through the Persian Gulf, or through Syria.

The PNAC will take great glee in stomping Syria.

Far be it from me to take a PNACer at face value, but what if this is really about "liberating" Lebanon?

It's a nice place, strategically positioned on the Med. It could probably make room for three to five brigades of U.S. troops, all nice and snuggled up at the foot of the boss.

And it has a small minority of Christians, too. That could be expanded if Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell called for a new Children's Crusade to liberate Antioch.
