11/2 CBS poll: More Bad News For Bush (35% approval!)
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 07:57 PM by deadparrot
(CBS) Most Americans believe someone in the Bush Administration did leak Valerie Plame's name to reporters – even though Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald indicted no one for doing that. Half of the public describes the matter as something of great importance to the country, and this poll finds low assessments of both the President and the Vice President – with the President's overall approval rating dropping again to its lowest point ever.

The nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court has had minimal impact so far, and assessments of the war in Iraq remain negative – with more than ever before saying the Administration was less than honest in discussing their reasons for war.

There is one less dark spot — perhaps reflecting lower gas prices, far fewer now than one month ago are pessimistic about the future of the economy.

What is wrong with those conservatives? Didn't they get what they want from their idiot leader?

The merciless miering of Miers to replace SCJ O'Connor with a male took the cake.

2. I think we need to make sure...
the question(s) any and every Republican who runs for (re)election ever again needs to answer is:

"Do you agree with Bush on (insert anything here)"

Make them choose to be a "Bush Republican" or "NOT".

Divide and conquer.

An Army of 90 million or so!!! They could take care of that pesky Iraq problem....

They could create the Uber-erect AmeriKKKan Empire they have wet dreams over!!!

They could spread over the globe conquoring country after country until....?????

Japan and Germany can answer that question.

It showed he has little compassion, little ability to appoint effective people, and no ability to hold himself accountable. In other words, no leadership capability.

8. boy did it ever
The core of his "appeal" is his being decisive and forthright. In this situation he was clay-footed, bumbling and showed that his prime concern was for his image. Katrina is over. Although opinions of many events (such as the intel run-up to the Iraq war or the '00 election) will change over time, the verdict of Katrina is in and unchangeable.

He literally failed dismally on the very character traits that were used to define him, and it was a real eye-opener.

This was a colossal P.R. failure, and it will hurt him more than any other misstep.

61. And he was softened up for Katrina by Cindy Sheehan. She singlehandedly
yanked the focus back on the war late in the summer when he, on the other hand, was doing what? Kicking back on his lazy good-for-NOTHING ass on another vacation he didn't deserve and certainly didn't work for. She, on the other hand, put a human face on the tragedy of this war, which we had not had before. We didn't have coffins on the news. No funerals were covered, and george couldn't possibly be bothered to make time to attend any. There was no news coverage of the body bags being unloaded at Dover Air Force base. Complete lockdown. So all we had were people like us - dismissed as malcontents and Saddam-lovers. Then came Cindy, whose situation FORCED even hostile press people to refer to her as "grieving mother." Yeah. So what do you DARE to do, in attacking or demonizing a critic who is widely described as a "grieving mother"? Answer - not a whole heckuva lot. ANYONE who dared to tarnish her or swiftboat her looked like a cold, heartless, callous meanie (as they WERE and STILL ARE). The assholes who would attack her were really put in a box. It was frickin' BRILLIANT!!!!

So when his lordship refused to meet with her, and smirked for the cameras as he chuckled dismissively about her having a "right" to her opinions, he wound up looking like a cold, heartless, callous, meanie, too.

And then came Katrina. Cindy left him knocked down on the mat, having suffered a whole bunch of deft jabs from an unexpectedly formidable opponent. And then came Katrina to close the deal.

And the rest, as you and other posters have pointed out, is history.

He has YET to recover. These are body blows. He has YET to recover, and there's been little time to stop and catch his breath. And thus weakened, other punches are starting to come in from OTHER opponents who now see new openings and new soft spots that weren't there before. He's a fighter going down. Every punch from one of these episodes hits a little harder, into a soft spot that's even softer and more broken. He's losing momentum, and if more fair-weather friends from his own party, AND those who went along reluctantly because other monsters in the GOP muscled them into even semi-unwilling complicity, he'll just keep losing more and more.

WHAT WE CANNOT DO NOW IS LET UP. Now that he's on the ropes, we CANNOT give him a chance to recover. We CANNOT AFFORD THAT. Generosity is for donations to the Democratic candidate of your choice, or the hurricane survivor of your choice, or some other worthy person/cause. NOT for bush. NO MERCY.

NO MERCY. DON'T GIVE AN INCH. DON'T LET HIM HAVE A SINGLE INSTANT TO REGROUP, OR CATCH HIS BREATH, OR GET ANY REST.

NO MERCY.

We could clinch this, folks. As long as we don't A) give up or B) get complacent. THIS IS NOT OVER YET.

82. Yeah, well, mispreceptions die hard.
"we were better taken care of under Republican presidents then Democratic ones while serving."

Clinton's Army was the best prepared and best trained...ever. When Bush is done, he'll have wrecked the army and crippled healthcare for the large numbers of veterens returning home. The troops are getting screwed going and coming back.

Hillary could kick any Republican's ass in the next election with one caveat: voter verified paper ballots.

87. Well...
First of all, welcome to DU, catholic27!

Second, what disrespect of soldiers are you talking about? Time and time again, the war protesters have been saying that they support the troops, just not this illegal/immoral war they are in. Why should you be upset at war protesters "who would never make that sacrifice", yet have no ire for the chicken hawk Young Republicans, who'd rather drink beer while urging the administration to keep you there to die? Why not be upset at the yellow cowards like Rumsfeld, who openly and publicly mocked the generals that disagreed with him? Or Wolfowitz, who cared so little about the troops he thought only 200 had died instead of the several hundred that it actually was (at the time)?

As an active duty sailor who has served under several different Administration over my 20 years, Republicans have done more to screw up the military (especially the deck-plate/runway/ground-pounding personnel)than Democrats. We've only recently recovered from Reagan's "600 ship navy" fiasco....

On the other hand, if you own defense stocks, Republicans are very good for you.

89. You make some good points
but, even if soldiers enjoy fighting and are happy to just do what they're told, it's up to their civilian leaders to use them in a responsible way. The war in Iraq has made the world less safe and created more terrorists.

As for Hillary, she could do well against Condi, but she isn't the favourite round here by a long shot. Most DUers prefer General Wesley Clark (and prob about a half a dozen others before Hillary).

10. Absolute Zero for Bush is now about 10%
He's alienated about half his "base" of Fundies, so if he was caught passing the codes to our nuclear arsenal to Osama Bin Laden, he'd still have about 10% support.

Of course, that might be worth the risk to him. If Osama nukes NYC, Bush's popularity could make a comeback to 98 or 99% in a week's time.

14. Reminds me of "Goin' Down", somehow...
Floatin' down the river
With a saturated liver
And I wish I could forgive her
But I do believe she meant it
When she told me to forget it
And I bet she will regret it
When they find me in the morning wet and drowned
And the word gets 'round
Goin' down
Goin' down

Coming' up for air
It's pretty stuffy under there
I'd like to say I didn't care
But I forgot to leave a note
And it's so hard to stay afloat
I'm soakin' wet without a boat
And I knew I should have taken off my shoes
It's front page news
Goin' down
Goin' down

I wish I had another drink
It wouldn't be so hard to sink
I should have taken time to think
Besides I got the picture straight
She must have had another date
I didn't need this extra weight
I wish that I could see the way to shore
Don't want no more
Goin' down
I'm goin' down

And now I see the life I led
I slept it all away in bed
I should have learned to swim instead
And now it's really got me stumped
I can't believe why I jumped
I'd like to get my tummy pumped
I can't believe they drink this stuff in town
This dirty brown
Goin' down
Goin' down

I wish I looked before I leaped
I didn't know it was so deep
Been down so far I don't get wet
Haven't touched the bottom yet
This river scene is gettin' old
I'm hungry, sleepy, wet and cold
She told me to forget it nice
I should have taken her advice
I only want to go on home
I'd gladly leave that girl alone
What a way to spend the night
If I don't drown, I'll die of fright
My pappy taught me how to float
But I can't swim a single note
He threw me in to teach me how
I stayed there floatin' like a mama cow
And now I've floated way down stream
I know this has to be a dream
If I could find my way to shore
I'd never, never do this anymore
I'll give you three, I've been down nine
I'm goin' down just one more time.
Goin' down.
Goin' down.

Now the sky is gettin' light
An everything will be alright
Think I finally got the knack
Just floatin' here lazy on my back
I never really liked that town
I think I'll ride the river down
Just movin' slow and floatin' free
There's a river swingin' under me.
Waving back to the folks on shore
I should have thought of this before
I'm floatin' on down to New Orleans
Goin' to pick up on some swingin' scenes
I know I'll know a better day
I'll go down groovin' all the way
Goin' down
Goin' down

Baby sweetie.

It's a fine coalition of the anti-tax greedheads, the psychotic megachristians, the Israel acolytes and the simply mean and stupid, but somewhere around a third feels about right.

If ever a vicious bullying nobody deserved to be humiliated, he's the guy, but expecting any less is a might low...

97. yeah, no shit--even in this article
Look at the first line: Most Americans believe someone in the Bush Administration did leak Valerie Plame's name to reporters – even though Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald indicted no one for doing that.

Should be, "even though Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation is still ongoing and he has not yet indicted anyone for it."

But no, they have to get that right-wing talking point in there right up front.

It won't get him out of office. We're stuck with him for 3 years. He's doing far more damage than ever. There may be no help at all for the elderly, disabled and poor after this year let alone the crap he's going to do in his last few years when it's just a free run to pass anything he wants.

He's too scary and it's only getting worse. I doubt his administration cares about polls.

98. E&P: CBS Poll Finds Public Takes Plamegate Seriously
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001433090

NEWYORK One particular number in the new CBS poll released Wednesday has drawn most of the interest: President Bush's approval rating plunging to 35%, his worst standing ever and the lowest mark recorded in decades. But buried in the lengthy survey was an appraisal of the salience of the current Plame/CIA leak case scandal that is equally revealing.

It shows that, contrary to some reports this week from leading conservative columnists, the public does take this issue seriously, indeed.

Some 51% said it is already of "great importance," with 35% choosing "some importance" and 12% "little or not importance." Here are comparable numbers for other notable scandals in recent years, along with the month and year the poll was taken:

104. I guess the Repiglicken meme that "nobody cares about this".....
isn't holding water. They're running out of ways to spin this, someone might actually have to take responsibility for once and we al know who that someone is. Members of his own party are calling for a "clean sweep" of the White House, that "new blood" is needed to right the severely listing ship of state. Will "little boots" bush listen, or will he, as always ignore criticism and "stay the course". His inaction on this issue could very well be the deciding factor for next year's mid-term elections. There are some very nervous Repiglickens out there at the moment and their anxiety will only heighten as we get closer to November, 2006. I look for things to get pretty nasty in the coming months with an all-out revolution a serious possibility.
If bush doesn't do something, anything, the Repiglickens are in deep doo-doo come fall of '06. If the Democrats gain seats in both the House and Senate bush's already faltering agenda will be completely worthless. He'll be able to spend as much time as he wants to clearing brush in Crawford, there certainly won't be anything for him to do in Washington.

117. I'm telling you, wait until next spring
If there isn't a lynch mob in front of the whitehouse I'll be very surprised. There are a whole fuckload of factors that will be coming into play over the next few months, we will be emerging from a cold dark winter where many will be lost from choosing either to buy food, heat, medicine, fuel, and other necessities.
Being programmed to buy, buy, buy for christmas and suffering from guilt people will out of habit pull out the plastic, and have heart attacks when the bills come due.
The situation in Iraq will not be getting any better either, there is a shitstorm rolling our way, but the suffering is going to lead to the destruction of the repukes.

118. He's down to 41% in North Carolina - I'd love to see all the
* voting states. Wasn't it something like <=5 that he has over 50% a few weeks ago?

President Bush's approval rating in North Carolina continues to decline, according to a poll released Friday by Elon University.
The poll found that 41 percent of those questioned approve of Bush's handling of the job of president. That is down from 45 percent in a poll Elon did in April and 52 percent from a poll the university did in March.

WHAT THE POLLSTER SAYS

"Certainly, the Bush administration seems to be in a rut with the public," said Hunter Bacot, director of the Elon University Poll. "We can say it's the war or the economy, both of which are almost indisputably playing into his poor evaluations, but we also have to consider the events surrounding Hurricane Katrina, the grand jury investigations and now the failure of the president's Supreme Court nominee."

<snip>

* That fewer North Carolinians approve of Bush's handling of the war in Iraq. Less than 39 percent of those surveyed approve of how Bush is handling the war, down from 45 percent in a poll the university did in March.

* That 51 percent of those surveyed said the U.S. should not be in Iraq, while 43 percent agreed with U.S. involvement in Iraq.

119. I just want to ask those people the 37%
What has Bush done for them while he has been in office?
I really would like to know. Has anyone have a answer to my question?
I can't think of one thing. The only thing I have heard is that he gave them a tax break. What these people don't understand is they might have got a tax break but they are now paying higher prices on health care energy costs food etc etc.
