Hate from the heartland (Anti-gay group pickets LI hazing HS)

Hundreds of Long Islanders stood outside Mepham High School yesterday to blast a handful of out-of-town picketers who said teaching tolerance of gays led to the football hazing incident that has rocked the school.

The picketers - eight family members from a church in Topeka, Kan., gathered on the sidewalk in front of the Bellmore school at 7 a.m. waving anti-gay signs, including one that read "God Hates Fags."

"When you teach children that it's okay to indulge in any kind of sex act that they like ... that it's okay to be gay, it is inevitable that they will end up being violent and doing things that they shouldn't," said Margie Phelps, who protested with a handful of relatives.

<snip>

Debbie Saladino, 37, shook her head in disbelief as she surveyed the family of protesters in front of her daughter's school.

"How they can turn hazing into homosexuality is beyond me," she said. Then she spotted a sign held by one of the Phelps sisters reading, "Thank God for Sept. 11th."

1. A true sign of liberals' commitment to free speech
is that the Phelps family is allowed to live.

10. They are self appointed
Its basically an extended family. It claims to be Baptist but it is not recognised. They live in a large commune and pretty much all adults in the family are also lawyers. Thus they issue constant law suits to the surrounding community attempting to force their issues. Not a fun bunch by an strecth of the imagination. A family of hate.

13. You know, a diligent district attorney
just might be able to hang a RICO conviction on Freddie and his family. Guys like Freddie rack up a lot of enemies over the years. Some of them might have some interesting things to tell a grand jury. Mere supposition on my part, but grandstanding assholes like him always have major skeletons in their closets.

5. Let me reconstruct this comment a bit....
Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 03:06 PM by Flubadubya
"When you teach children that it's okay to indulge in any kind of sex act that they like ... that it's okay to be gay, it is inevitable that they will end up being violent and doing things that they shouldn't," said Margie Phelps.

"When you teach children that it's okay to indulge in any kind of hatred that they feel... that it's okay to be hateful, it is inevitable that they will end up being violent and doing things that they shouldn't."

Which do you think is the truer statement?

Better get a clue Margie Phelps! You really should before your "God" gives you one. Karma really can be a bitch, as you will surely discover.

26. DO NOT impute that SHIT to the rest of the Midwest!!
Seriously, much of the midwest has some incredibly odd views on the rest of the world.

Seriously, you are seriously WRONG if you are trying to say that any significant number of Midwesterners side with these horrible people. Get a fucking clue, we're real people here just like anywhere else in the country. I know conservative Republicans here where I live who are good people, who would NEVER in a million years agree with such evil people. I am sick and tired of people on the coasts bashing the rest of the country like this.

8. That photo is documented evidence of CHILD ABUSE.
They are forcing those children to engage in hate speech. That is abuse.

They are encouraging the children to blindly hate. That leads to increased stress, negative emotions that feed back into the hater, and lead to all kinds of emotional, physical, and mental problems.

THEY ARE ABUSING THOSE CHILDREN!

15. That is the Truth
Social Services should be investigating those Childrens' family and then find them a good home. I can not imagine what those children will be like in ten or twenty years.

11. These guys make Pat Robertson look like a liberal
Those poor children. The Phelpses and their group came to the Detroit area about a year or so ago, to picket in front of the catholic church in Ferndale (St. James). I guess this parish is tolerant, by comparison to more conservative ones. After the lunatics left, a bunch of youth groups from area churches got together and washed the sidewalks where the protestors had marched.

16. These jerks also came to Mr. Rogers memorial service
last May in Pittsburgh. It's a shame these kids aren't taken from them. Be better if they watched Mr. Rogers instead of being raised by their hateful parents.

I hope when they grow up they will be able to break free of this influence.

Rev. Fred Phelps was a no-show in Pittsburgh, today, though his supporters showed-up downtown, and were met by resistance from a large contingent of counter-protestors and Mr. Rogers fans.

On Saturday, May 3rd, the much maligned Reverend Fred Phelps made the wise decision not to show his face in Pittsburgh. He had planned to protest the life of Mr. Rogers at a memorial service, but was nowhere to be seen. However, Phelps did send his family and church members to do his dirty work. As might be expected, the Phelps group was met by a large group of counter-protestors who did not want to hear Phelps' message of hate and intolerance, especially when directed at the much loved Mr. Rogers.

The Phelps group was encountered right at the memorial service at Heinz Hall, in downtown Pittsburgh. Counter-protestors attempted to surround the small group, but were ordered to move by police who claimed they were blocking the sidewalk.

There were about 150-200 counter-protestors, and less than 10 protestors in Phelps' entourage. The Phelps group, members of the Westboro Baptist Church, reportedly had signs such as "Thank God for 9-11," "Aids Cures Fags," and "Mr. Rogers: Burn in Hell."

22. According to articles I've read...
These boils on the backside of humanity picketed Mr. Rogers' funeral because of his way of making kids feel that it's ok to be what they are,and that Rogers(an ordained minister)is condemned to hell for not using his television show to blast gays. I have to admit that people like this disrupting funerals strains my belief in total freedom of speech/assembly. People are going through the grief and loss of losing a loved one and they have to be subjected to this HATE? That just isn't right.

25. My favorite blog answered that one for me.
From my favorite blog who blogged about this yesterday so this is about what Phelps has said:

He also called Fred Rogers (the beloved star of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood") a "faggot who poisoned children's minds."

I know of who, I feel, truly fulfilled his calling sans offense, sans bullshit, and I say that as a diehard atheist. To spit in his eye.... well, if your Gods exist, Phelps, I hope They have a few choice thunderbolts for you. You hateful, horrible insect.

14. Here's some prophetic words of advice...from a Rabbi!

Rabbis attacked by armed settlers
By Shaista Aziz

Tuesday 28 October 2003, 10:59 Makka Time, 7:59 GMT

A group of rabbis from a peace group in Israel have been attacked by armed settlers.
Rabbis from the peace group Rabbis for Human Rights (RHR) were attacked by five armed settlers. Some of the men had their faces covered when they threatened to attack the rabbis with clubs.

<snip>

"Rabbi Ascherman describes the settlers at Mitzpeh Yitzar as ''fanatical and violent''.
He told Aljazeera.net that he found it disturbing that the children of the original wave of settlers were more violent and hard-line than their parent's generation.
''It's very sad, the fist wave of settlers have brought their children up to hate. They have nothing but contempt for Palestinians and for Jews like me.
"The parents have created monsters that are out of control, in some instances they are even turning on their own parents''....

Maybe we should re-consider tolerance of 'religious' freedom

18. Why do they always have to mention they're from KS?
No one I know back home can stand them. Really, as RW as Kansas is right now, you would think they would have *some* support, but they are universally reviled. Guess there is a "too far" for the religious right.

Wyoming town votes to move Ten Commandments monument after anti-gay proposal
Wednesday October 29, 2003
CASPER, Wyo. (AP) City leaders voted to move a Ten Commandments monument out of a public park after an anti-gay preacher proposed his own monument saying slain college student Matthew Shepard is in hell.

The Rev. Fred Phelps said displaying the Ten Commandments monument would force the city to allow other public displays as well, including his own.

Phelps' proposal was unanimously rejected Tuesday by the City Council, which then voted 5-4 to move the Ten Commandments monument into a plaza that will honor a variety of historic documents.

But the move may not fend off Phelps' plan, or satisfy a separate complaint from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, which had threatened to sue if the Ten Commandments monument was not removed from City Park, where it has been for nearly 40 years. (snip/...)

Its too bad that Fundamantalists dont believe in mass suicides.

If only id had a time machine, Id write that one in:

"Ye who hateth all except Ye, and Ye who spreadth hate and ecourage violence, shalth joinith together on each sabbath day. In ye church of fundamentalists, and ye shalth pratice thy game of Russian Roulette..."
